Earn $1.50 A Word And Up At This Parenting Mag

AmericanBabyAmerican Baby magazine has been doling out mothering advice since 1938, and it’s not stopping anytime soon. The monthly pub’s key demographic these days are first-time millennial moms seeking advice on everything baby related.

The mag’s content is 50 percent freelance written and their various online counterparts, including Parenting.com, are in need of fresh content. The pub’s editors dish on the coverage they’re looking for:

American Baby is specifically targeted to the first-time, millennial mom in her 20s to early 30s, and that focus has a large impact on the book’s style and tone. “We’re very modern about our approach to having a baby, and I think that’s reflected in the writing,” says Mindy Walker, American Baby’s executive editor. “It’s very friendly, but we also use a lot of authority. We don’t dumb it down for the reader; we keep it very direct and approachable.”

How to Get Your Feature Pitch Accepted

For writers who want to avoid all the front-of-the-book dating, and jump straight to the matrimony of a feature story assignment, it will take more than a killer lede or a glowing portfolio to get an editor to say yes. In Mediabistro’s latest feature for AvantGuild members, veteran freelancers share their best advice for landing that first piece in the “well” of a magazine.

“Persistence can be just as important as having great ideas,” noted Oregon-based writer Teri Cettina, whose work has appeared in Parenting. Before writing for many national magazines, she says she focused on a few pubs and pitched them “like it was my job” before breaking into the industry.

Meredith Buys and Folds Parenting and Babytalk

Meredith Corporation couldn’t strike a deal with Time Inc., but it had better luck with Bonnier Corporation.

Meredith just announced that it has acquired Parenting and Babytalk magazines — along with their websites — from Bonnier. The magazines will then be folded into Meredith’s Parents and American Baby.

If you’re a Parenting or Babytalk subscriber, get ready for Parents and American Baby to replace them, beginning with September issues. Parenting’s site — parenting.com — will continue to exist, however.

Sadly, as with any merger/folding, people are likely to find themselves out of jobs. We’ll keep you posted about what we hear.

Redbook Adds to Editorial Staff

Redbook editor-in-chief Jill Herzig has announced a trio of appointments to the editorial team. Leslie Robarge and Sarah Smith join the magazine as deputy editors, while Tiffany Blackstone has been promoted to deputy editor.

Robarge comes to Redbook after a stint at Bon Appetit, where as project manager she developed a line of branded small appliances, cookware, and kitchen tools exclusively sold on HSN.  Prior to that, Robarge was  freelance writer whose articles appeared in several periodicals including The New York Times Magazine, InStyle, and BusinessWeek. Earlier in her career, she was a senior editor at Glamour.

Smith most recently was editorial director of KIWI. During her tenure, the brand won two Folio Eddie awards. She was also a senior editor at Parenting and news editor at Psychology Today.

Blackstone has been a senior editor at Redbook where she edited the ASME-nominated Would You Get a Mommy Tuck? Prior to joining Redbook, Blackstone was a freelance writer for Glamour, Self, and Essence.

Parenting Introduces iPad Exclusive Quarterly

Forget boring socks and underwear.  This season parents will find what they really need in their stockings: expert advice for raising their kids.  According to Folio, Parenting magazine’s parent company (does that make them the grandparent?) Bonnier Corp. has released an iPad only quarterly titled Parenting Seasons.  The all-digital venture will roll out winter, spring, summer, and fall editions and include a monthly calendar filled with parenting lessons.

Digital editorial director Rachel Fishman Feddersen says Parenting Seasons has a lot to offer subscribers:

We think we’re providing real value.  We didn’t want to just toss something on the iPad, we want to give people a lot for their money.

The pricing plan for Parenting Seasons varies depending on when issues are purchased – $2.99 at the start of a season, $1.99 midseason, and 99 cents at the end of the season.  The inaugural winter edition is sponsored by Gerber and Huggies.  How adorable?!

Industry Vet Stephanie Dolgoff Joins Health

Steph-June 09.jpgFormer Self magazine features director Stephanie Dolgoff has joined Health magazine as special projects director.

Dolgoff, the founder of the blog formerlyhot.com, joins the Time Inc. title with more than 20 years of industry experience, including stints at Glamour, Real Simple, Parenting and Cosmopolitan. A book based on her blog, Formerly Hot…Finally Content is due out this fall.

Glamour Exec Managing Editor Joins Food Network Magazine

maria.jpgFood Network Magazine announced a handful of appointments today, including the addition of Maria Baugh as managing editor.

Most recently, Baugh was executive managing editor at Glamour. She has also worked as managing editor at House & Garden and executive editor at InStyle and Teen People. But Baugh has earned her foodie cred as the owner of Butter Lane cupcakes.

FNM also hired three people in marketing, including two integrated marketing managers, Amy Santoriello and Adam Roth. Santoriello is joining the magazine from Parenting magazine, and Roth formerly worked at Details. Kelsey Stokes was also hired as marketing coordinator.

The magazine has been working to expand its marketing department recently, adding new staffers and promoting others just last month.

Bonnier Acquires Book Publisher

WOLOGO.jpgMagazine publisher Bonnier Corp. has grown rapidly in the past year, thanks to several major acquisitions. The most recent, announced today, brings book publisher Weldon Owen Publishing into the Bonnier fold, giving the company its own book division.

Weldon Owen is most well-known for publishing illustrated non-fiction books, including cookbooks. This specialty will mesh well with Bonnier’s stable of titles, including Saveur, which has previously worked in partnership with the publisher. Weldon Owen also produces children’s titles and family/adult reference books, partnering on some of those titles with Bonnier’s Parenting magazine.

This deal marks Bonnier’s fifth acquisition in 15 months, as the three-year-old publishing company seeks to expand its reach. In October, the organization picked up independently published parenting title Conceive, which followed a big deal in June under which Bonnier acquired five Hachette Filipacchi enthusiast titles.

Former Reader’s Digest VP Wildman Joins Bonnier

wildman headshot.jpgMark Wildman is leaving Reader’s Digest to join magazine publisher Bonnier Corp. as senior vice president of corporate sales and marketing. Wildman was most recently vice president of integrated marketing at Reader’s Digest Association, but his replacement, Maureen Polo, was announced last week. He will start at Bonnier on November 6.

While at RDA, Wildman worked to establish the integrated sales and marketing group for the company’s Food & Entertaining Affinity. Before joining Reader’s Digest in 2007, Wildman worked as executive director at Conde Nast Media Group.

“Bonnier is a strong, forward-thinking organization with more than 50 consumer media brands like Saveur, Popular Science, Field & Stream and Parenting,” Wildman said. “As consumers continue their shift toward real and meaningful, the Bonnier brands are very well-positioned, delivering specific well-defined audiences which are highly engaged and emotionally invested in the content.”

Bonnier Picks Up Parenting Title Conceive

Conceive cover.jpgIn a week where Condé Nast shuttered parenting magazine Cookie, rival magazine publisher Bonnier Corp. is beefing up its parenting portfolio with the purchase of Conceive magazine.

The formerly independently published magazine — founded by Kim Hahn in 2004 — will join Bonnier’s other magazines in the category, Parenting and Babytalk. Conceive‘s entire staff will be joining the Bonnier team, and the magazine’s Web site, Conceive On-Air radio show and several related books are also part of the deal.

This new addition to the Bonnier family is surprising, especially considering what other companies like Condé are doing. Instead of folding titles, Bonnier has been collecting them, even ones within the same category. This is the company’s fourth acquisition in the past year. In June, the Florida-based publisher bought five enthusiast titles from Hachette Filipacchi, including Popular Photography, Flying, Boating, Sound & Vision and American Photo.
