The Atlantic is partnering with PBS’ NewsHour to produce broadcast adaptations of the magazine’s work. 10,000 Words In a statement, the two news organizations said: NewsHour and The Atlantic plan to broadcast reports on a wide range of topics over the next six months. The partnership combines the strengths and sensibilities of both brands: The Atlantic’s ideas-driven journalism on issues of import, and the editorial depth and broadcast expertise of PBS NewsHour. FishbowlDC The Atlantic’s partnership with NewsHour marks the magazine’s first ongoing broadcast venture. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media The first report, which aired Wednesday night, is based on the Atlantic’s November-issue cover story about the spread of teenage sexting and its societal and legal consequences. The Atlantic’s Hanna Rosin reported the NewsHour piece with anchor Judy Woodruff. Variety The stories will run online at PBS.org/NewsHour and TheAtlantic.com. Sara Just, a veteran of ABC News, joined PBS NewsHour as its executive producer earlier this year.

Jay Leno Nears Deal to Launch CNBC Show (THR / The Live Feed)
Jay Leno is lining up his first regular television hosting gig since leaving The Tonight Show in February, and he’s staying in the NBCUniversal family. TVNewser Leno’s new show would air on CNBC in primetime and focus on his longtime love of cars. WSJ / CMO Today A CNBC spokesperson declined to comment. Both NBC and CNBC are units of Comcast Corp. Since he stepped down from The Tonight Show, he has continued to work as a stand-up comic. He is known for his love of automobiles and has a large collection of rare and classic cars. NYT No other details have been released pending completion of the contract, though the executives confirmed the show would not be comedy-based. Leno has been a regular presence on NBC.com with a motor-vehicle-obsessed show called Jay Leno’s Garage. Deadline Hollywood The news comes as the cable business network comes off its lowest-rated quarter of the year in primetime and the lowest-rated quarter in its history in the demo for the business day, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. CNBC has been looking to broaden its primetime slate with reality TV formats. To date, its most successful such bid has been its reruns of ABC’s Mark Burnett-produced Shark Tank.

PBS NewsHour Names ABC’s Sara Just Executive Producer (FishbowlDC)
PBS NewsHour announced Thursday that 25-plus year ABC News-er Sara Just has been tapped to serve as the program’s executive producer and SVP of NewsHour Productions LLC. Variety Just will oversee the daily operations of the nightly news program, co-anchored by Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff. Deadline Hollywood Just, who has been ABC News’ deputy Washington Bureau chief since April, will join NewsHour on Sept. 2, succeeding Linda Winslow, who is retiring. Just’s hire comes on the heels of WETA taking over NewsHour from MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, the company named after former anchors Robert MacNeil and Jim Lehrer, on July 1. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Before becoming deputy Washington bureau chief at ABC, Just was senior Washington producer for Good Morning America and had spent 17 years at Ted Koppel’s Nightline. ABC News president James Goldston said in a memo to staff Just was integral to the innovation of their digital political coverage. NYT NewsHour has struggled in recent years to raise enough funds to meet its annual budget of $25 million to $30 million, although WETA officials said at the time of the ownership transfer they were confident they could find the money. With money tight, the program has not been able to do as much field reporting as some critics would like. Just said that she would better understand the program’s budget challenges once she started, but added “I think reporting from the field is essential,” when paired with insightful analysis.

President Obama met Tuesday afternoon with a small group of conservative reporters, columnists and commentators for an off-the-record discussion. The group, according to a source familiar with the meeting, included Wall Street Journal editorial page editor Paul Gigot, National Review Washington editor Robert Costa, Washington Examiner columnist Byron York, syndicated columnists Kathleen Parker and Washington Post columnist and Fox News contributor Charles Krauthammer. Obama and the journalists talked for about 90 minutes in the Roosevelt room. TheWrap President Obama blamed Republicans in Congress for putting the country on the brink of financial disaster in a Tuesday press conference about the government shutdown that clocked in at more than an hour — but that wasn’t enough time for the president to take questions from TV reporters. Obama answered questions from reporters with the AP, Bloomberg, Huffington Post, Reuters, NPR, New York Times, Financial Times, Roll Call, Agence France-Presse, CBS News (though that was Mark Knoller, who is primarily a CBS Radio reporter) and Real Clear Politics. Slate / Weigel Would the press conference have been improved by some Obamacare questions? Probably. (Having given a bunch of interviews about the topic since mid-September, he was probably ready with a robotic answer.) Is the White House press corps, generally, too inclined to let the president ramble about some existential issue? Sure. Doesn’t change the fact that the shutdown blew the exchanges, and immigration reform, and basically everything else out of the news — and some conservatives predicted that would happen. Gwen Ifill, Judy Woodruff Named Co-Anchors of PBS NewsHour

At the Television Critics Association Summer Press tour in Beverly Hills Tuesday afternoon, PBS named Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff as the co-anchors and managing editors of the PBS NewsHour, making them the first all-female co-anchor team in broadcast news. NYT The appointments are another milestone for women on television and in journalism, seven years after Katie Couric became the first female solo anchor of a network nightly newscast. The co-anchor arrangement harks back to the 1970s, when Jim Lehrer and Robert MacNeil founded the nightly newscast that was later named The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. TheWrap / Report From The TCA PBS president Paula Kerger said at a Television Critics Association panel Tuesday that she was surprised it’s taken so long for two women to co-anchor a broadcast. “I was thinking about this announcement — I almost paused in drawing attention to the fact that it’s two women,” she said. “We chose two people we thought would be the strongest anchors… and they just happened to be two women.” HuffPost Ifill and Woodruff have co-anchored together before. During the 2012 election, they were the first all-female team to host coverage of the conventions, and also co-hosted on election night. “The true accomplishment will be when we stop making ‘firsts,’” Ifill said last August.

Because of declines in support from corporate sponsors, the show’s producer, MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, will close the two offices it has outside of the Washington area — in Denver and San Francisco — and lay off most of the employees there. The company, which is based in Arlington, Va., will also eliminate several of what it calls “noncritical production positions” at its main office. TVNewser None of the affected staffers were named in the email, but TVNewser hears that one of those departing is San Francisco correspondent Spencer Michels, who started reporting for the program 30 years ago. While the program will still maintain in-house crews, the NewsHour will rely more on freelance contributions going forward. NewsHour Partners With GlobalPost, Takes Lehrer Off Title

17660_logo.jpgPBS is making some big changes to its powerhouse “NewsHour” program. Starting December 7, the show will no longer be “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer”, but “PBS NewsHour”, though longtime host Jim Lehrer will stay on with the show as an executive producer.

But the title of the show and the reduction of the role of its main anchor are not the the only differences for the program: “NewsHour” will also be teaming up with digital news site GlobalPost to supplement its international coverage. With GlobalPost’s host of correspondents from around the world, Linda Winslow, executive producer of “NewsHour”, said the year-old current events site has much to offer the PBS program. “The NewsHour is committed to in-depth coverage of international news, yet we cannot to do it all ourselves,” she said in an announcement about the partnership.

The truth is, publicly funded news can only pay so much for original reporting, and striking a deal with a young digital company to provide content may be the most pragmatic way to stretch the network’s budget. Meanwhile Lehrer is realistic about stepping aside for a rotating cast of new hosts on the show, as he told Howard Kurtz of The Washington Post, “I still have the hunger…I didn’t have the hunger to do it all by myself. But I really have the hunger for it to be done, and done well.”
