Robb Report Acquisition is Good News for Detroit

RockbridgeGrowthEquityLogoBesides the odd billionaire, executive and successful actor, one of the other things linking Malibu to Detroit is of course cars. Vanity Fair recently chronicled the joy Robert Downey Jr. derives from tooling up and down the PCH in a Corvette, he being one of a number of such owner-examples.

Today, thanks to some news involving Malibu luxury publication Robb Report, there will soon be some reverse Malibu/Motor City synergy. As a result of the magazine’s acquisition by private equity firm Rockbridge Growth Equity, a Robb Report office will open in downtown Detroit sometime next year. At a price-per-metropolitan-square-foot we imagine will still be about as low as can be found. From today’s announcement:

“It is always thrilling to provide the needed capital and support to a motivated and smart leadership team who sit at the center of an internationally growing space that is primed for innovation and creativity,” said Rockbridge managing partner Brian Hermelin. “We believe Rockbridge and its family of companies’ operational expertise and infrastructure, particularly in the areas of marketing and technology, will help leverage the opportunity for Robb Report to grow at an accelerated pace.”

Courtney Love Drops By International Press Academy Event

ShutterstockCourtneyLoveThere was a pretty interesting moment last night in Century City at the Intercontinental Hotel, where the global group of entertainment journalists known as the International Press Academy (IPA) had gathered to hand out their annual Satellite Awards. It happened when Courtney Love surprise-presented the Pickford Award to a man who played an important role in her one-time movie career.

From a summary article by IPA vice president Mike Szymanski:

Love admitted being a troubled personality in Hollywood, and the man she was presenting an award to, Mike Medavoy, actually paid the high insurance premium out of his own pocket for her so she could do her role in The People vs. Larry Flynt, which earned her lots of acting kudos.

Deadline’s Mike Fleming Takes Another Playboy Detour

Although Mike Fleming’s deadline.com duties keep him very busy, he still finds the time to continue one longstanding freelance tradition. The Playboy interview.

Beginning with Robert Downey Jr. in the 1990s, Fleming has contributed around two dozen centerpiece Q&As to the publication, chatting with everyone from Denzel Washington to Harrison Ford to Quentin Tarantino. For the June issue, the A-lister across the tape recorder is Tom Cruise. Towards the end of the conversation, Fleming asks Cruise what he learned from that whole Matt Lauer-Oprah Winfrey train wreck:

“When I go back and look at it, I find myself thinking, I don’t feel that way. I get how it came across, but I don’t feel that way, and I never have. Telling people how to live their lives? I saw how that came across and how pieces were edited.”

Mel Gibson Exclusives a Watershed Moment for TheWrap

It’s been an absolutely insane seven days at TheWrap as a result of the site’s exclusive coverage of Mel Gibson’s December 2011 Costa Rica meltdown. First came the nine-page letter written by Joe Eszterhas, followed yesterday by some frightening audio corroboration, recorded by the screenwriter’s son Nick.

“It’s a phenomenal shift moment for the site,” confirms Sharon Waxman via telephone to FishbowlLA. “We’ve never seen traffic coming in the way it has in the past week.”

TheWrap has registered hundreds of thousands of page views for each Gibson story, while social media shares have been in the tens of thousands. The Gibson coverage has also buffeted TheWrap’s international profile, with lots of UK and German linkage. When we spoke to Waxman, there was a Russian TV station crew setting up at her offices for an interview.

TheWrap’s numbers would be even larger if the audio of a sober (and perhaps severely bi-polar) Gibson had remained exclusive to the site. But because the file was shared, The Drudge Report is linking today for example to a TMZ story (with full credit to TheWrap) about the audio.

A Strange Hollywood Blog Story Grows Stranger

Over the weekend, New York Post reporter Maureen Callahan shared a fairly sizable Hollywood scoop: an interview with “Enty,” the pseudonymous operator of showbiz gossip blog Crazy Days and Nights (CDaN). In recent weeks, the site has received a lot of coverage because of the Robert Downey Jr. identity-claims made by commenter “Himmmm.”

Callahan’s article was published April 1, leading a number of observers to speculate that the piece is a joke. More precisely, that the interview did properly occur but was a vehicle for misinformation. Sure enough, after vetting the details given to her by this alleged 43-year-old wills and probate attorney, Callahan came to the following conclusion:

Nearly everything Enty says doesn’t check out… It all indicates that Hollywood and the media have been punked – duped by a soft-spoken probate lawyer with delusions of grandeur. And he’s only getting bolder, accusing aging and dead stars of a rape, murder, pedophilia.

Hollywood Commenter ‘Himmmm’ Gets More Press

The latest MSM outlet to chime in on the crazy story of “Himmmm,” an anonymous Hollywood website commenter who has claimed that he is one-part Robert Downey Jr., is the FoxNews.com 411 showbiz column.

In the article by Joe Piazza, the actor’s high-powered publicist Alan Nierob confirms that Downey Jr. has nothing to do with the salacious observations of Himmmm and hints that the actor’s reps may well want to pursue legal action. First to this story last week were Gawker and Jezebel.

One offshoot of the bizarre Internet firestorm is no doubt a major spike in traffic for Crazy Days and Nights, the murky Tinseltown website where Himmmm has long trolled. It’s almost enough to make FishbowlLA think the owner of the commenter account is also the owner of the website.
