Dave Itzkoff Moderates, Christoph Waltz Modulates

ChristophWaltz92ndYOn Twitter, Dave Itzkoff described his Friday night Q&A at the 92nd Street Y with Tim Burton, Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz as “loopy.” As opposed to “awkward,” the term used by Ashley Lee, an editor with Mediabistro sister publication THR.

The beauty of this particular situation is that the entire live-stream is archived. So, when you have the extra hour, you can watch and decide for yourself, unfiltered, what adjective best fits the interaction between the New York Times culture writer and the two-time Oscar winner.

Waltz had to wait quite some time before the conversation reached his far-left chair perch, for which Itzkoff graciously apologized. But after a long day of promoting duties, Waltz seemed to be rubbed the wrong way by a question that referenced his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the idea that he might lie awake at night waiting for phone calls. In short order, Waltz steered this Y event to ”Why…?”

LA Times Adds New York-Based TV, Media Reporter

StephenBattaglioPicSome may know the name Stephen Battaglio from his articles and appearances on shows like Morning Edition, CBS’ Sunday Morning and the Today show. Others perhaps have perused or purchased his books about the TV industry.

But for those who do not know the Battaglio background and turn to Google Search, the first two auto-completed strings are “Stephen Battaglio Oscars” and “Stephen Battaglio Seth MacFarlane.” Due to the fact that on the Oscars telecast hosted by MacFarlane, Battaglio’s faux byline appeared underneath the gag item headlined “Seth MacFarlane, Worst Oscar Host Ever.”

In the real world, Battaglio has taken his talents to the Los Angeles Times. From today’s internal announcement by assistant managing editor for arts & entertainment John Corrigan:

Stephen has joined our “Company Town” team as a reporter covering the TV and media business out of New York.

TheWrap is in Full Expansion Mode

AdaGuerinPicTheWrap started in 2009 out of Sharon Waxman‘s guest house. Then came an office in Santa Monica, followed by a bigger space in West Los Angeles and an overflow annex a few minutes away for the sales and marketing team.

This weekend, TheWrap will move for a fourth time, to a consolidated Santa Monica space three times the size of its current headquarters. The company recently hired Jordan Chariton away from our sister blog TVNewser to work as a New York-based media reporter. And today, TheWrap announced that long-time Hollywood Reporter staffer Ada Guerin (pictured) has come aboard as creative director (effective immediately). Guerin was with THR for 14 years.

“There are a couple of other announcements that will be coming down the pike [in addition to Guerin] that will change around stuff,” Waxman tells FishbowlNY via telephone, taking a quick break from writing her next column. “On the editorial end, we’re growing both the movie team and the TV team. [Executive editor] Joseph Kapsch has been a really key person in recruiting and building the newsroom.”

Mark Miller Headed to American Public Media’s Marketplace

MarkMillerPicMark Miller is crossing over from the print side to the public radio side.

Starting next month, the former Hollywood Reporter deputy editorial director and Newsweek-Daily Beast director of editorial operations will be installed as managing editor of American Public Media’s Marketplace. He will be based in the downtown Los Angeles office. From today’s announcement:

“As a longtime listener of Marketplace, I’ve always admired the innovative and smart way it explores and illuminates the world of business, finance and economics,” said Miller. “To be able to join Marketplace, especially as it continues to expand its reach digitally and through live events, and to be able to work with such a talented group of journalists is incredibly exciting.”

On Twitter yesterday and today, TheWrap senior film reporter Jeff Sneider questioned the integrity of an item posted by Deadline EIC Mike Fleming Jr.

Initially, he mocked Fleming for labeling as exclusive some project news involving Michael Eisner‘s Tornante Company . Then, less forcefully, Sneider noted and wondered about the deletion of the Deadline item in question.

It’s Official: Politico’s Headed to Brussels (FishbowlDC)
A 12:44 p.m. ET email from Politico president Jim VandeHei confirmed expansion to Europe, joining with Berlin-based media company Axel Springer to cover European politics and policy. Capital New York The 50-50 joint venture will cover the European Union as well as “European politics and policy more broadly,” VandeHei and editor-in-chief John Harris told staff in the memo, confirming recent reports that the influential Beltway website and congressional newspaper was eyeing expansion abroad. HuffPost / Backstory Details have not yet been finalized for the new organization, though Politico‘s leadership has been working on the plan throughout the year. VandeHei, Harris and owner Robert Allbritton have met in Brussels with top European journalists and diplomats about the potential launch of Politico Europe, as the outlet is tentatively titled, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media VandeHei and Harris called Axel Springer “Europe’s largest and most powerful media company.” “Axel Springer is a highly impressive, highly ambitious company that shares our obsession with building media companies that produce and can sustain nonpartisan journalistic excellence,” they wrote. “They do about $3.6 billion in annual revenue and house a number of digital start-ups in their Berlin-based offices. We are excited to join forces with them.” NYT Politico was founded in 2007 and rose quickly to become a player in the world of political reporting. It has recently been considering ways to grow and refine its journalism. Last year, it started a magazine that focused on deeper and more expansive stories. The site also hired an executive editor Rick Berke from The New York Times in October, but he resigned Sunday, citing differences with Harris and VandeHei. Axel Springer, which publishes Bild and Die Welt among others, said last year that it was selling two regional newspapers and several magazines to focus on digital media.

THR and Billboard Tap Head of Video, Quartz Editor Expands Role

A couple Revolving Door items to note this afternoon, involving The Hollywood Reporter and Quartz. Details are below.

    • The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard have named Jeremy Colfer head of video. He comes to the glossies from Sundance TV, where he worked as a senior producer for branded content. Previously Colfer served as senior director/GM, Official Comedy Network at Bedrocket Media Ventures.
    • Zach Seward, a senior editor at Quartz, has added product director to his role. In a memo announcing the change, Quartz’s editor, Kevin Delaney, wrote, “This move reflects the vision and importance of Zach’s contributions to what Quartz is as a digital product. He’s played a constant lead role in discussions about how to improve and expand our site, and has originated countless ideas for how it should look, work, and be structured.” Seward has been with Quartz since it launched in 2012.

Kirk Douglas on the Kindness of Lauren Bacall

I met Betty when she was 17 and I was 24. We were both studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. I was on my own in New York with meager funds. That winter, Betty saw me shivering in my thin overcoat. She didn’t say anything, but she talked her uncle into giving me one of his two thick coats.

I wore it for three years. That sort of unassuming kindness was one of her most endearing characteristics. When I had the honor of presenting Betty with her honorary Oscar in 2009, I told the audience: “People said Bacall was ‘tough.’ She’s a pussycat with a heart of gold.”

Janice Min Pays Tribute to Her Departing Culture Editor

Both the importance of culture editor Degen Pener‘s contributions and Min’s fondness for him, personally, shine through in a memo circulated this afternoon:

Dear Staff:

I’m sure many of you have heard the news that culture editor Degen Pener will be leaving us in September, but I wanted to formally tell all of you as I know his impact is felt around so many parts of this organization.

Almost exactly four years ago, Degen was among the first five people I hired at The Hollywood Reporter in anticipation of its relaunch. I had known Degen a bit in New York, and was surprised (as I considered him a bit of a free spirit) that he wanted to come work on what was then just an imaginary magazine that I could only describe conceptually (admittedly, it sounded pretty good). As our culture editor, he dove right in for the launch, and was instrumental in creating so much of the tone and style that is now synonymous with The Hollywood Reporter.
