The Huffington Post Recruits Biz Dev VP

logo_homepage_hp.gifThese new media properties are getting increasingly serious about the business side of their operations. Last week, The Daily Beast signed up Brian Dick as vice president of business development.

Now it’s the Huffington Post‘s turn: Derek J. Murphy joins the company from CNN as senior vice president of business development. In his former job, “he was responsible for developing strategic partnerships for the CNN Interactive Group,” according to a release. At the HuffPo, he’ll “oversee new and existing business partnerships for The Huffington Post (“HuffPost”), focusing on distributing HuffPost content across a wide-range of media platforms, creating video partnerships and developing business partnerships for the site’s expanding list of content verticals.”

THE HUFFINGTON POST NAMES DEREK MURPHY SVP, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

New York, NY, May 5, 2009 — The Huffington Post (huffingtonpost.com), a leading news and opinion site, announced today that Derek J. Murphy has been named Senior Vice President, Business Development. Murphy will oversee new and existing business partnerships for The Huffington Post (“HuffPost”), focusing on distributing HuffPost content across a wide-range of media platforms, creating video partnerships and developing business partnerships for the site’s expanding list of content verticals.

Murphy joins The Huffington Post from CNN, where he was responsible for developing strategic partnerships for the CNN Interactive Group.

While at CNN, Murphy oversaw integrated media partnerships with companies including Google, CareerBuilder, Amazon and LG Electronics.

Prior to CNN, Murphy, who earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from Tufts University and an MBA from the Wharton School, was a marketing consultant for the development and launch of the New York Knicks and Rangers first on-line ticketing service in partnership with Ticketmaster, and was head of business development for Skillgames LLC, an early stage online games venture backed by Walker Digital and the Walt Disney Corporation.
