Two Gourmet Staffers Join Former Publisher At Marie Claire

marie claire jan.jpgThe death of Cond&eacute Nast‘s award-winning Gourmet might already exist in the “things that happened last year” category, but the ghost of the beloved title still lingers in today’s stories.

Consider the announcement from Marie Claire today, which mentions that the U.S. edition of the magazine has just hired two new ad executives to work with Nancy Berger Cardone, the vice president and publisher of the Hearst mag. Both Diane DePaul and Anne Yost Carroll come from previous jobs at both Allure and Gourmet, where Cardone was formerly vice president and publisher. The new appointments bring DePaul on at the women’s magazine as associate publisher/advertising while Carroll will serve as account director. DePaul and Carroll are replacing Tami Eagle Bowling and Rachel Schauman, respectively, who are both leaving the company, today’s announcement said.

Prior to working as associate publisher at Allure, which she left in 2008 to join Gourmet, DePaul worked as associate publisher for Seventeen and advertising director for Soap Opera Digest/Soap Opera Weekly. Carroll has previously worked at Health magazine and advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi.

Cardone is not hiding her hiring favoritism, saying in a statement: “I’ve worked closely with Diane and Anne at both Gourmet and Allure, and I am thrilled to bring them on as part of the Marie Claire team. Their industry experience and energy will be essential to the continued success of the brand.”

DIANE DEPAUL NAMED ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER/ADVERTISING AT MARIE CLAIRE

ANNE YOST CARROLL NAMED ACCOUNT DIRECTOR

NEW YORK, January 5, 2010 — Two new advertising executives have joined the U.S. edition of Marie Claire, a joint venture between Hearst Magazines and Marie Claire Album, today announced Nancy Berger Cardone, the magazine’s vice president/publisher. Diane DePaul has been named associate publisher/advertising and Anne Yost Carroll joins as account director. Both will assume their new roles on January 7th and will report directly to Cardone.

DePaul recently served as the associate publisher of Gourmet, and previously was associate publisher at Allure from 2004 until 2008. Prior to Allure, DePaul worked at PRIMEDIA as the associate publisher of Seventeen and as advertising director at Soap Opera Digest/Soap Opera Weekly from 1992 until 2004.

Most recently, Carroll was at Gourmet focusing on a variety of categories including the beauty, food and pharmaceutical business. From 2005 until 2008, she was beauty and health director at Allure. Prior to Allure, Carroll was an account manager at Health magazine from 2003 until 2004, and a media supervisor at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising from 1999 until 2003.

“I’ve worked closely with Diane and Anne at both Gourmet and Allure, and I am thrilled to bring them on as part of the Marie Claire team,” Cardone said. “Their industry experience and energy will be essential to the continued success of the brand.”

DePaul will replace Tami Eagle Bowling and Carroll will replace Rachel Schauman, both of whom have left the company.

Since Marie Claire’s launch in the U.S. 15 years ago, the magazine has remained a key player in the beauty and fashion category, most recently demonstrating growth in a challenging market with advertising pages in the December 2009 issue up 20 percent and the January 2010 issue showing a 76 percent increase over last year, serving as the highest number of pages in a January issue since 2002. Additionally, Marie Claire is currently enjoying a successful partnership with Project Runway on Lifetime.
