Archie Comics Introduces First Openly Gay Character

Last week Archie Comics introduced the beloved comic book series’ first openly gay character. He will engage in a hamburger eating contest and dodge the affections of one of Archie’s girlfriends.

The new character Kevin Keller (pictured above, via) will debut in September, in issue #202 of Veronica, entitled “Isn’t it Bromantic?” The character will bring more diversity to the preppy universe of Riverdale High where Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead have lived for decades.

Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater had this statement: “The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie’s hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books.”
