The Thurber Jury Loves You, Larry Doyle!

larry-doyle-thurber.jpgWhen we arrived at the Algonquin Hotel last night, shortly before the reception for the annual Thurber Prize for American Humor, Larry Doyle and his wife were already in the lobby, chatting with his agent, Sarah Burnes, and we mentioned that unfortunately we would not be able to stay for the actual awards ceremony because of another commitment. Doyle advised, totally deadpan, we should stay to witness the scene he would create when he was passed over for the award by either of the other two nominees, Patricia Marx or Simon Rich. "It'll have been a conspiracy," he insisted preemptively. "Voter fraud!" we suggested.

Fortunately, that outburst never came to pass, as Doyle's novel, I Love You, Beth Cooper, was declared the winner of the 2008 Thurber Prize, which goes a long way towards sealing its reputation as the funniest book of the year. And it turns out that the novel, which began as a film treatment that wasn't going anywhere, has since found its way back to Hollywood, with Hayden Panettiere as the eponymous object of desire. (The film is scheduled for release in early 2009; we understand that the test screenings are already taking place.) Doyle, however, is happy to stay with his family back in Baltimore; during his years as a writer on The Simpsons, he recalled, he used to commute nearly an hour to work every morning—two hours if he took the freeway.

AAP Renames, Relaunches Scholar/Pro Excellence Prize

psp-award-logo.jpgThe Association of American Publishers has rebranded the annual prizes handed out by its professional and scholarly publishing division for more than three decades. They will now be known as the the American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence, or "PROSE Awards." According to a press release, "publishers will benefit from changes that not only enhance the prestige of the awards, but also improve publishers’ chances of taking home prizes." That's because publishers can now submit as many books as they like for each of the award categories, and the prizes themselves will be the object of a major PR and marketing push. Another new twist: Members of the Association of American University Presses will also be able to submit books for consideration, along with the professional and scholarly publishers who have historically been eligible.

Submissions are being accepted now; the awards will be handed out in Washington, D.C., in February.

Esther Margolis Honored for Indie Publishing Legacy

esther-margolis-headshot.jpgThe New York Center for Independent Publishing announced yesterday that it will present this year's Poor Richard Award, named after the almanac launched by early American indie publisher Ben Franklin, to Esther Margolis, who founded Newmarket Press in 1982 after spending 17 years rising through the ranks at Bantam Books, from a promotions assistant to the senior vice president in charge of global marketing and publicity. Today, Newmarket publishes between two and three dozen books a year, splitting its emphasis on the world of pop entertainment and various categories of pragmatic advice, from childcare to personal finance.

She will be presented with the award at the NYCIP's annual benefit reception in early November.

Readers will be able to nominate their favorite book in the following nine categories: Easy Readers, Fantasy & Science Fiction, Fiction Picture Books, Graphic Novels, Middle Grade Novels, Non-Fiction Middle Grade/Young Adult Books, Non-Fiction Picture Books, Poetry, and Young Adult Novels. The Plates Are Cleared, It's Time for the Group Photo!

neiba-awards-2008.jpg

The New England Independent Booksellers Association presented its annual book awards during a luncheon at last week's trade show up in Boston—this year's winners include (from left) Nathaniel Philbrick for non-fiction, David Macaulay for the lifetime achievement President's Award, Alice Hoffman for fiction, and Tomie dePaola for children's books. (The publisher of the year, John Viehman of Down East Books, was in another part of the room.)

Also last week: Arianna Huffington was the guest speaker for the Publisher's Advertising and Marketing Association's fall luncheon. Afterwards, she posed with PAMA officers Melissa Lord (treasurer), David Nudo (president), and Christine Duplessis (secretary).

Kirk Read Wins 1st Open Door Contest

kirk-read-headshot.jpgBack in October, we told you about the Open Door Project, a literary contest for gay male writers launched by former Avalon Publishing Group editor Don Weise and other editors who had pioneered the mainstreaming of gay literature in the late '80s and '90s. More than 250 gay men (none of whom had ever published a book of fiction before) submitted entries, and the winner—announced yesterday—was Kirk Read (right), a San Francisco-based performance artist and HIV counselor who is also the author of the memoir How I Learned to Snap. (Jurors for the prize included Christopher Bram, Alexander Chee, Samuel R. Delany, Dennis Cooper, Robert Gluck, E. Lynn Harris, Scott Heim, Andrew Holleran, David Leavitt, Stephen McCauley, Dale Peck, and John Weir.)

"From the first few sentences of his story it's clear that Kirk is a writer with a voice all his own," Weise commented. "The judging committee as a group agreed, consistently singling out the originality of Kirk's voice but also his deft handling of humor, dialogue, character development, as well as his explicit yet intelligent use of sex as an integral part of the story. I'm thrilled to have such a fresh and uninhibited talent as the first recipient of the Open Door award." Read will collect his prize—a trip to New York City where he'll meet with editors and agents, plus a public reading and a private reception—next January, and Weise hopes the contest will become an annual event: "Enough complaining about how hard the business is, especially for marginalized groups like gay writers. I hear all about that a lot but seldom do I ever hear anything about people being proactive and actually doing something constructive to correct the problem. That's our mission at the moment."

2008 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers Announced

ronajaffe-2008-winners.jpg

At a private reception in Manhattan last Thursday night, bestselling author Elizabeth Strout (front and center) spoke to the winners of the 2008 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Awards: Joanne Dominique Dwyer and Amy Leach (middle row), Jennifer Culkin, Jolie Lewis, Hasanthika Sirisena, and Therese Stanton (back row). Jaffe created the foundation in 1995 to provide financial support and encouragement to young writers at the start of their careers; last year, the grants were raised to $25,000.

Previous recipients of Jaffe Foundation grants include Judy Budntiz, Rebecca Curtis, Rivka Galchen, and Ellen Litman. Among this year's winners, Culkin already has an essay collection scheduled for publication next year, while the others are all working on significant projects, including poetry and short story collections, essays, and novels.

New York's Romance Writers Celebrate Golden Apples

rwa-nyc-2008.jpg

The New York City chapter of the Romance Writers of America held its annual Golden Apple Awards reception last Thursday night at the Upper East Side's Havana Room, with chapter president Elizabeth Mahon (right) on hand to present citations to literary agent Deidre Knight (whose award was accepted by Knight Agency member Pamela Harty) and Dorchester editor Chris Keeslar. (Author of the year Dee Davis and publisher Raeline Gorlinsky of Cerridwen Press were also on hand to receive their prizes, while actor Jason Gaffney accepted a lifetime achievement award on behalf of his mother, author Suzanne Brockmann.)

Before the awards were handed out, authors and agents mingled and caught up with each other; among the topics of conversation: Lori Perkins's recent blog post about how the current economy will affect writers: "Close on any offer that comes your way now, or try to get a three book deal, because it's going to be very slow for the next few months."

best-industry-blog.jpgThank you to all the readers who voted for GalleyCat in the "best publishing/industry blog" category of the Book Blogger Appreciation Week awards. It's a great honor to been selected as the winner in this category, and to be described as "already a must-read." Let's take a moment, though, to recognize the four other nominees:

The Obscene Life of Barney Rosset

Rosset_Photo-1.jpgEarlier this week, The National Book Foundation announced that publisher Barney Rosset will be honored with "The Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community" at the National Book Awards ceremony on November 19, 2008.

To celebrate, I caught up with Neil Ortenberg, the former publisher of Thunder Mouth Press and the executive producer of a new documentary about Rosset's life, Obscene. Ortenberg recalled Rosset's fight to publish banned works by Henry Miller and D.H. Lawrence, marveling at the fact that brave booksellers were arrested for selling Tropic of Cancer--even after the country's highest court had approved the book's publication.

The literary lion also reminisced about a collision between governmental bureaucracy and hypocrisy...
