Mexican Writers Can Now Self-Publish Through Amazon

Amazon has a new Kindle Store in Mexico, and Mexican writers can now self-publish with Kindle Direct Publish.

Kindle authors in Mexico will get 70 percent royalties. AppNewser has more details:

Mexican consumers can buy eBooks through apps or on Kindle devices. The devices are available from Amazon, as well as in Gandhi stores in Mexico. Amazon has also expanded its self-publishing platform Kindle Direct Publishing south of the border. Independent authors and publishers in Mexico can use the toolset to sell their books in more than 175 countries worldwide. Like in the U.S., KDP authors in Mexico will own their copyright and earn 70% royalties on most sales.

Sourcebooks Acquires Online-Only Retailer

Sourcebooks has acquired Simple Truths, an online-only retailer that sells and creates inspirational books, prints and DVDs.

The company will become a Sourcebooks imprint, publishing around 100 backlist and upcoming books.

Founder Mac Anderson will serve as executive editorial director and Dan Green will be director of the new imprint.

Writer vs Writer is a battle between 4 randomly drawn participating writers. Each has the same amount of time to write the best short story (~750 words) on a randomly assigned prompt. It’s a quick fun challenge for you to enjoy as a break from your main projects. See some examples: Match Thread 2 Match Thread 1 … The winner of the battle is the person who receives the most votes. Voting is public, you need to leave a comment to a story for a point to be awarded and anyone may vote. The winner of a battle gets awarded 2 points, whilst points are shared equally in the event of a tie vote.

Wikipedia Loves Libraries Campaign Returns

Libraries and Wikipedia users have a lot to learn from each other. In a Wikipedia Loves Libraries campaign started in 2011, Wikipedia users connected with librarians to edit and share resources.

The campaign will re-launch this year, with events already scheduled for New York City, Akron, Nashville and Maryland. Follow this link to set up a Wikipedia Meetup at your library. Check it out:

Wikipedia Loves Libraries is a general initiative for improved Wikimedia engagement with libraries (and archives), and more concretely an annual campaign of wiki-workshops and edit-athons at libraries around Open Access Week in October/November … events can be held on any day anytime in the Fall, mainly centered around Open Access Week in October/November 2013. With grassroots organizing help from local Wikipedia:Meetup groups, and WikiProject United States Wikimedians/Wikimedia United States Coalition. Everyone is free to start a Wikipedia Loves Libraries page for your local institution, and please sign up at your event’s meetup page.

Guest Blog Post Strategies for Writers

In his enormous Book Launch Guide post, author Jared Dees shared 33 different ways authors can let the world know about their book. His post included some solid advice about writing guest posts on blogs to promote your book. Check it out:

Reach out to the bloggers you already know first. Usually they will trust you enough not to bother asking about what you will write ahead of time. Plus, remember that many of them could use a break from writing. Next reach out to the bloggers you do not know well but who have the ear of your target market and target readers. Pitch them with 3-5 well-written headlines on topics you know their readers will love. Let the blogger choose the topic and then write the article.

Six Second Storytelling Advice

Author and comedian Ted Travelstead has built an ongoing story with Twitter’s Vine video tool, playing both characters in a funny set of conversations between hillbilly twins in the big city.

You can watch all his Twins Talkin’ videos here. We’ve embedded the first video in his series below. He called the six-second video platform “a fun, goofy toy.”

Travelstead published The Petraeus Files: All the Photos, Chats, Poems, and Other Super-Secret Emails They Don’t Want You to See with St. Martin’s Griffin imprint and has more than 30,000 followers on Twitter.

‘Aspiring Girls’ Nonfiction Book on Kickstarter

Mary-Jane Wagle hopes to raise $42,000 to self-publish her nonfiction coffee table book, Aspiring Girls. The funds will be used to cover the costs of holding photo shoots, printing, and distribution.

The finished book will contain the inspirational stories and photographs of 70 successful Ethiopian women. We’ve embedded a video about the project above. Here’s more about the project:
