Gawker’s Hunter Walker Investigates J-School

hunterw.jpgAs online journalism moves towards shorter posts and more aggregation, the craft of reporting a long-form story or nonfiction book may be in danger.

Today’s guest on the Morning Media Menu was Hunter Walker, the Gawker blogger (and writer for mediabistro.com and other publications) who is blogging about his experiences at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Walker shared how the celebrated journalism school responded to his Gawker work and how grad school has already changed his reporting.

During the interview, Walker confessed that he’s learning things he could never learn while blogging: “I’m getting a really different experience. You can learn a lot about blogging on the job. You can learn using the web, HTML code, how to embed video, but you can’t learn about covering some of these beats that are a little more difficult than chasing PR people.”
