With one more day until the final Harry Potter film, fans are reminiscing about growing up with the young wizard. The Plain Dealer hosted a “How Harry Potter Changed My Life” essay contest for its local readers.

The judges highlighted 15 essays out of 300 submissions. Ten of them received honorable mentions, four were deemed runner-ups and one was named the grand prize winner. They will publish the winner tomorrow. Prizes included a preview screening of Deathly Hallows Part 2 and $100 gift certificates from Half-Price Books.

Here is a (spoiler-free) excerpt from 13-year-old Jamie Vidumsky‘s essay: “Harry, Ron and Hermione taught me that even the best of friends can fight and make up. Sirius Black taught me that there’s more to people than just good and bad. Professor Remus Lupin taught me that chocolate can make anything better. Severus Snape taught me that in the end, helping others is worth it, no matter the cost.”

Severus Snape Crowned Greatest Harry Potter Character of all Time

Professor Severus Snape has been crowned the winner of the Harry Potter World Cup. Over at MTV News, 64 characters were pitted against one another to determine who is the greatest Harry Potter character of all time.

MTV News asked Alan Rickman on what he will miss about playing Snape in the films. He replied: “I won’t really miss anything because it’s been such an extraordinarily complete character to play. To go back…I don’t know what the scenario would be. It’s been so much about he appears to be one thing and then you find out a bit more about him as time goes on.”

MTV created a chart to record each round of the competition, including star characters like Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. After 7.4 million votes were cast, Snape emerged victorious against Weasley in the final round. Do you think the right character came out on top?

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Part 1: Will It Sell Books?

Every time a Harry Potter movie is released, sales for the book series rise. However, according to the Nielsen Company’s research, the movie boost has decreased with each film. In the graphic embedded above, you can see how series book sales have increased in the lead-up to Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (click to enlarge).

Nielsen has more details: “During the four weeks following the November 2001 big screen debut of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, sales of the corresponding book more than tripled over the previous four weeks to 956,700 units … The most recent Harry Hollywood incarnation, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, had a less dramatic effect on the book brand at its July 2009 box office debut. All Harry Potter books saw an uptick in sales but on a lower scale: Half-Blood Prince sold 50,400 units the four weeks following the movie’s debut, compared to the 33,800 books purchased the four weeks prior.”

What do you think? Will the final two films drive more sales this year? Or do all the Harry Potter fans already own all the books? Share your thoughts in the comments.
