Hugh Howey Reveals His Single Most Valuable Self Promotion Tool

Hugh Howey, the bestselling self-published author of the Wool series, hosted a Ask Me Anything interview on Reddit yesterday.

He answered a series of common reader questions–sharing his “single most valuable tool” for self-promotion.

In terms of self-promotion, what would you say was the single most valuable tool for you? Facebook. Not just for connecting with my most ardent readers, but for giving me the ability to unwind in a productive way. After FB, I would say having my own blog/website. For physical tools, my laptop is the easy answer.

Hugh Howey Lands Simon & Schuster Book Deal

Formerly self-published science fiction novelist Hugh Howey has inked a book deal with Simon & Schuster to publish Wool in March 2013.

Nelson Literary Agency agent Kristin Nelson negotiated the deal with senior editor Karyn Marcus. Since he self-published the book in July 2011, Howey has sold 300,000 eBook copies of his novella series, landed a book deal in the UK and saw his book optioned for film.  Here’s more from the release:

Wool is the thrilling story of a post-apocalyptic world in which a community lives in a giant silo underground, hundreds of stories deep. Inside, men and women live within a society full of regulations they believe are meant to protect them from the toxic outside world. But a new sheriff is about to be entrusted with fixing her silo, and she will soon learn just how deeply her world is broken. The silo’s inhabitants are about to face what their history has only hinted about and never dared to whisper: Uprising.

Hugh Howey’s Wool Series Gets Book Trailer Treatment

Random House UK has released a book trailer for the Wool series by Hugh Howey, a formerly self-published science fiction series set in a dystopian future. We’ve embedded the trailer above–what do you think?

Director Ridley Scott and producer Steve Zaillian acquired the film rights to Wool earlier this year–. You can read an early draft of Wool at this link. The former yacht captain published Wool in July 2011, and has since written four more books in the series.

If you are already a fan of the books, Howey will give away proof copies of the novels. Here’s more about the giveaway: “Five individual books. WOOL spelled across the spine. A wrapper. A new chapter nobody has ever read before (chapter 13 in book 2). All this will be yours; it’ll be free; and I’ll even sign each of the five books before bubble-wrapping them and shipping them to your home.”
