Smashwords CEO Considers What Amazon Hachette Dispute Means For Indie Authors

smashwords304Mark Coker, the founder of the self-publishing site Smashwords, has given a lot of thought to the Amazon Hachette negotiation troubles.

In a blog post about the issue, Coker mulls what this battle means for indie authors. Here is an excerpt:

The dispute with Hachette foreshadows what comes next for indie ebook authors at Amazon who have grown comfortable to KDP’s 70% royalty rates. Think about my divide and conquer reference above.  Indies are already divided and conquered at Amazon, but most don’t realize this.  These indies all have direct-upload relationships with Amazon.  They don’t have the collective bargaining power of a large publisher to advocate on their behalf.  As the unfolding events indicate, it’s questionable if even a large publisher has leverage over Amazon.

The Indie Author Manifesto: INFOGRAPHIC

indieauthorSmashwords founder Mark Coker has created an infographic called, “The Indie Author Manifesto,” based on his blog post defending self- publishing.

In the post, Coker discusses how the perception of self-publishing has evolved over the last six years and identifies the 10 dominant beliefs and values that characterize the indie author movement. He has turned that list into an infographic. The infographic will soon be translated to French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.

Smashwords Founder Mark Coker Publishes ‘Indie Author Manifesto’

Mark-Coker-HeadshotMark Coker, the founder of the self-publishing site Smashwords, believes that indie authors should be proud of self-publishing their work. To help encourage these writers, he has created the ‘Indie Author Manifesto.’

In the post, Coker discusses how the perception of self-publishing has evolved over the last six years. He identifies the 10 dominant beliefs and values that characterize the indie author movement in a move to explain the philosophical mindset behind the rise in self-publishing.

Check it out: “Where once self publishing was viewed as the option of last resort – the option for failed writers and an option marked by stigma and shame – self publishing is increasingly viewed as the option of first choice for many writers.  Over the next couple years I think we’ll reach a point where more first-time writers aspire to indie-publish than traditionally publish.  Indie authors are the cool kids club.”

Self-Published Author Lands Book of the Week Promotion at Apple’s iBookstore

Smashwords author JD Nixon scored the coveted “Book of the Week” promotion at Apple’s iBookstore this week, making the first book of the author’s Heller series free for a week for iBooks readers.

You can meet Nixon in an interview at the self-publishing distribution company’s blog. Smashwords founder Mark Coker wrote about the deal:

To give you a sense of the power of such a free promotional feature when combined with a super-awesome series that wows readers, as of yesterday, almost a week after her Book of the Week promotion ended in Australia, JD’s six priced titles held six of the seven bestseller spots in Apple’s Australia iBookstore. JD first published Heller at Smashwords on May 30, 2011, and distributes via Smashwords to Apple, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and Sony.

The Cover That Launched a Thousand iBookstore Sales

Self-published novelist R.L. Mathewson initially published Playing for Keeps with a plain blue and white cover, but saw a significant sales spike in the iBookstore once she added a steamy Shutterstock photo to her cover (embedded below).

Smashwords founder Mark Coker outlined the sales spike in a chart in his second annual Money Money Money presentation about Smashwords sales (complete slideshow embedded above). We caught up with Mathewson to get some cover design advice from the independent author:

The new covers caught the readers eye and it helped clear up any confusion they may have had about the books. The new cover along with the price helped the books sell. I would say that you should avoid covers that cause confusion, are horrible to look at, too plain, or too over the top. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a good cover, but you do need something that can help draw attention to your book and intrigue someone to take a chance on your work.
