Materials must be suitable for processing in the specific 3DP technology including possible post-processing, and they must satisfy the service performance requirements. This presentation deals with materials for 3DP. First is consideration of materials that are best suited for specific common 3DP processes. A brief review describes how material properties are quantified. A review of the mechanical properties of AM parts is given for polymer, metal and ceramic systems. September 17 4:00 pm - 4:45 pm Leveraging 3D Printing Through Innovative Design for Space Exploration Spaceflight is bounded by the environmental extremes of gravity, pressure, vacuum, radiation, plus high and low temperatures. Additional impediments are imposed by the costs of a rocket launch that has driven payload design toward miniaturized size and away from traditional low density-high cubic volume objects. Many of these challenges, however, have been reconciled and can even be leveraged with additive manufacturing, and more importantly with innovative 3D design techniques. September 18 11:30 am - 12:15 pm Shape Reality Digital fabrication systems are only as good in the end as the 3D design and models they are given, which in turn are only as good as the modeling software that is used, which in turn is fundamentally defined by the geometric core that drives the system. Today, 3D modeling software and CAD is largely still oriented toward visualization, planning and design, not shape fabrication. Furthermore, and contrary to some lines of thought, geometric computation, shape modeling and simulation research and development is still in its infancy. In an almost perfect illustration of these points - additive manufacturing hardware currently can outperform commercial modeling software and has been able to do so for some time (digital hardware leading software has not been true since the inception of the PC in the late 70s). The session will present what is being done at the edge of 3D modeling applications and development. It will also showcase current examples and outcomes in research and development and what needs to happen for software to catch up and lead hardware forward.
