Orb Turns iPhone into Apple TVOrb Networks is pushing the boundaries of placeshifting with its latest application that lets folks stream live TV to the iPhone or iPod touch. While Orb's placeshifting software works with most mobile browsers, the iPhone is known for limiting the types of video content it supports. To get around these limitations, Orb has developed something called OrbLive, which it says enables the streaming of any video format to an iPhone. "Although the iPhone provides users with a great way to experience the Web, it offers a ridiculously sub-par streaming video experience," said Orb CEO Joe Costello. "When all the carriers' free phones can stream lots of things that my iPhone can't, something's seriously wrong." Sounds cool, but you gotta wonder what the folks at Apple will think of the new software. To see how it works, check out the video below. Thursday May 08, 2008
Microsoft Denies Zune "Copyright Cop" Reports
More digital rights management madness: Microsoft issued a statement on Wednesday denying that there was any agreement to filter content on the Zune, according to Beyond Binary blogger Ina Fried. This is in response to a report in Wednesday's New York Times that had suggested future versions of the Zune might come with a "tiny cop capable of catching digital lawbreakers." The article said that the company was reportedly working with NBC to devise such a plan to fight against BitTorrented versions of shows like Heroes, 30 Rock, and more. "Microsoft has no plans or commitments to implement content filtering features in the Zune family of devices as part of our content distribution deal with NBC," the software maker said in a statement. Microsoft spokesperson Adam Sohn echoed the sentiment to CNET News, saying, "We've agreed to work with these guys on a number of issues, but we have no plans or commitment to put filtering technology as part of this arrangement with NBC." ROK Buys Video Marketplace JalipoMobile video-on-demand provider ROK Entertainment Group is buying Jalipo Media, the latest in a string of acquisitions for the UK-based ROK. Jalipo is a self-proclaimed online marketplace for TV and video. Or, as RCR Wireless News describes it, "kind of a premium YouTube, allowing users to access news, sports, movies and other video content on computers for a fee." In the past year or so, ROK has acquired software firm Genium and mobile video provider Fun Little Movies. It's shelling out 600,000 shares, or about $16.8 million, for Jalipo. Zune Rocks a Video Update and Music Subscriptions
The music subscription offering is your standard issue Napster and Rhapsody-style service, where users pay a monthly fee for unlimited access to the entire catalog. The video store is more interesting. Beginning today, the Zune Marketplace will feature content from providers such as Comedy Central, FUNimation Entertainment, MTV, NBC Universal, Nickelodeon, Starz Media (including Manga Entertainment), Turner Broadcasting, Ultimate Fighting Championship, and VH1, according to the report. It's a bit late, but this at least begins to put the Zune Marketplace on an even keel with the iTunes Store, which has offered video for over two years. Monday May 05, 2008

Wow - People Really ARE Interested in Mobile TV
Sunday marked the launch of AT&T's long-awaited mobile TV service that runs on Qualcomm's MediaFLO network. Verizon Wireless has had its FLO-based service operational for over a year, but, the Times says, is reported to have signed up less than 100,000 paying subscribers. Friday May 02, 2008
The Real Truth about CNN on AT&T Mobile TVA Mobile Content Today reader at CNN let us know that we misinterpreted some of what we reported on regarding the CNN Mobile Live channel that will be available on the AT&T Mobile TV service launching on Sunday. Although the channel is "exclusive" to AT&T on MediaFLO USA's FLO TV service, CNN Mobile Live has been available on Sprint TV, which uses the MobiTV service, for nearly a year. Also, the channel is not a live stream of the CNN TV station as we said. It's a live video news service that provides mobile users with live streams of popular CNN programs like "American Morning," "Lou Dobbs Tonight," "CNN Election Center," "Larry King Live" and "Anderson Cooper 360" as well as breaking news coverage from CNN.com Live and CNN International. Kenya Gets Mobile TVSome folks in Kenya will soon be able to watch CNN, BBC World, some sports channels and more on their mobile phones. ITP.net reports that Kenyan telco Safaricom has partnered with satellite TV operator DSTV to launch that country's first mobile TV service. Initially available in Nairobi, the DVB-H service will offer 10 local and international channels. According to the article, the TV-enabled phones needed will cost roughly $403. The first month of the service is free for consumers who sign up by June 30. After that, the monthly fee is about $16. While on the surface, the cost is about the same as V CAST Mobile TV and AT&T Mobile TV subscribers are expected to pay in the US, Kenya has "a per capita GDP of just US$1,600," which will likely hamper widescale adoption. It's Official: AT&T Turning On Mobile TV On Sunday
As expected, AT&T Mobile TV will launch with 10 channels, eight that are also available on Verizon's similar service - CBS Mobile, Comedy Central, ESPN Mobile, Fox Mobile, MTV, NBC 2GO, NBC News 2GO and Nickelodeon - and two AT&T exclusives. The first exclusive is PIX, featuring content from Sony Pictures Television. The second is CNN Mobile Live, a live, 'round-the-clock stream of the CNN TV station. As for what we didn't already know, mobile TV fans who sign up soon can also check out a special, limited-time channel called CNCRT. Available for two months, CNCRT will rotate through a collection of about 30 concerts delivered by Control Room, CNET's News.com reports.
