"I went to press today," Eric Kampmann reported during a Monday evening phone call, informing GalleyCat that he had prepared a 125,000-copy first printing of the Goldman-enhanced edition of O.J. Simpson's If I Did It. It's a drop from the 400,000 copies ReganBooks had begun shipping before HarperCollins pulled the plug on the project last fall, but it's still the largest project in Beaufort's history. AP via FoxNews: Barnes & Noble online pre-orders surge for O.J. Simpson book.

Conrad Black, who was convicted of fraud and obstruction of justice in July, is asking a Chicago judge for a new trial or an acquittal, saying he remains optimistic about his chances since it "would be a miscarriage of justice to let the verdict stand." In an email response to The Canadian Press on Monday night, Black said he had confidence in the motions' chances for success.

"Today, magazines exist in a universe of expanded entertainment choices for men," writes Chris Napolitano. "Even in the magazine universe alone, the competition is intense there are a lot of magazines out there! And now we're competing with free and pirated material online. It's a transitional period, and we're certainly one company with the resources and product to ride it out." AP via LAT: Playboy is set to launch a sexy social networking site dedicated solely to college students, its latest online venture as it tries to reinvigorate its stagnant finances.

Moody's Investors Service on Monday changed its outlook on the New York Times Company to negative, from stable, citing increased pressure on the publisher's advertising from other media as well as from a downturn in the housing market. Blaming the Times for Your Bad Reputation (Slate)
Jack Shafer: Of all the disruptions caused by the Web, the chance that an old New York Times story featuring incomplete or outdated bad news about you might nix your chance of getting a job must rank near the bottom. Yet that's what Clark Hoyt, the newspaper's public editor, spends his Sunday, Aug. 26, column on. One of the flaws in Hoyt's thinking is his belief that one's reputation is a possession, when one's reputation actually resides in the minds of others.
Simon Dumenco: I'm pleased to announce that High School Media 1: Media Guy the Musical is already well under way.
