Cubes: VIP Tour of Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal

Unlike most divorces, Dow Jones, the home of the Wall Street Journal, got to keep its home in the Midtown Manhattan News Corporation Building after the parent company split into separate print and broadcasting units.

Wendy Bounds,Wall Street Journal Editor and host of WSJ’s video offering “Lunch Break,” showed the kids at mediabistroTV that everything’s going to be OK by giving them a tour of the uber-modern heart of Dow Jones.

The guys were greeted by one of the legendary standing receptionists, got as close to a Pulitzer Prize as they’re ever going to get, took a color-toned glimpse into the paper’s past with wall sized silkscreens of old newsroom photos and managed not to end up as gossip fodder on the twitter page of the lobby’s chandelier.

Cubes: VIP Tour of Code and Theory

Code and Theory is a creative agency behind publishing websites like “The Verge,” and “Interview” magazine. They also have an odd fondness for the Dewey Decimal System.

Managing partners Steve Baer and Mike Treff took the mediabistroTV crew on an Olde Timey New York meets modern design tour of their fifth floor offices. The guys showed how they added wide open spaces, planned randomness and hip wood floors to the windows, the wood and the brick that originally came with the building built by the Astor family in 1886. Then there were the books, the many, many, many books.

Cubes: VIP Tour of Huge

In this episode of Cubes, the crew takes its first trip across the East River to see the DUMBO digs of ad agency Huge. No, they don’t live in a Disney film, DUMBO is New York for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass,” meaning it’s in Brooklyn.

And under that bridge overpass the mediabistro crew found the Huge folks hiply ensconced in the same space where the cardboard box was invented. Watch the video to see Huge Dogs, Huge copy machines named after Huge Dogs and Huge conference rooms named after celebrities who are huge but not Huge. Whoof. I am spent!

Media Beat: Brian Stelter’s Choice, Work in TV News or Cover It

How did an 18-year-old college student in Maryland gain the trust of and get access to TV executives and anchors in New York? “By posting 10 or 15 posts a day meant that the industry knew it was a reliable consistent source,” says Brian Stelter, creator of our sister site TVNewser and now a media reporter for the New York Times and author of the just released book “Top of the Morning.”

As he neared graduation, Stelter had to make a choice: work in TV news, or cover it.
