Billionaires Support Education

On the heels of Mark Zuckerberg‘s $100 million donation to Newark’s public schools, other donors with deep pockets have come out in support of educational causes.

Billionaire private equity firm co-founder Henry Kravis has also pledged $100 million to Columbia Business School (doesn’t quite have the same philanthropic ring to it, but it’s his alma mater). The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is launching a $20 million grant program to benefit entrepreneurs of all kinds who create technology to be used in the pursuit of college degrees. And Zuckerberg continued his efforts, inviting 400 wealthy “potential donors” to a Silicon Valley screening of the documentary about education, Waiting for Superman.

“As the very rich get incomprehensibly richer, there’s been a race to the top for reputation-polishing noblesse oblige,” writes New York magazine, which offers a list of big givers from the past couple of years.
