POLLING ALL PR TYPES: What Do You Want to Be Called?

Hello-my-name-is

Here’s a serious question: What do you want to be called by your colleagues in the industry, pals in the media, partners and clients?

Everyone in this not-quite-fabled industry has an idea of what they like and don’t like, what they hear and ignore, what they answer to and what they wish no one would ever call them.

Some are accustomed to the big agency titles of account executive, manager, director, supervisor, and other synonyms for “hierarchy.” Others are interested in the boutique titles of guru, ninja, expert, and other nom de plumes that mean “badass.”

More Career Advice for Upcoming PR Professionals

PR block

As hot as PR may be right now (check out the growing gap between communicators and journalists), young professionals still face considerable challenges in navigating their way around the industry.

Last week we spoke to Courtney Lukitsch, principal and founder at Gotham Public Relations, to learn more about how she evaluates junior-level candidates. This week she shared more insights on what applicants need to know and the ways in which the industry will change in coming years.

PR is a rapidly changing business. What is your advice to those just coming on to the scene?

Do your research upfront. If you walk in cold and unprepared to an interview, a PR pro will smell it on you and disqualify you almost immediately.

It’s a confidence and intelligence game. Plus, at most firms, a candidate will be interviewed by different members no less than three times. This is true even at the junior level given team dynamics, but it’s even more crucial when interviewing for mid-level and higher jobs.

Get Ready for More Entry-Level Jobs (Some Experience Required)

HELLOIAMNEW

Last week, Laurent Lawrence of the PRSA wrote an op-ed on the reasons behind PR’s big turnover problem. One of the issues he addressed was “nonexistent onboarding”, or managers who hire entry-level employees and expect them to manage accounts, like, yesterday.

In an unrelated story this April, Richard Edelman responded to an inflammatory Financial Times piece by admitting that too many firms “dump” their media relations work on the very same newbies. Sorry, guys.

Yet a report published late yesterday in The Wall Street Journal tells us to expect an increase in entry-level PR jobs over the next few years. Here’s the thing: those jobs will require more experience and more refined skill sets than they did in the past.

As the WSJ’s Lauren Weber says in the video after the jump, “internships are the new entry-level jobs.”
