Brian Purchia has left his post as Deputy Communications Director and Tech Advisor for San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to join Burson Marsteller’s digital arm, Proof Integrated Communications.

Newsom’s former communications director, Nathan Ballard, joined Burson to run their San Francisco office just a few weeks ago.

“Brian’s done genuinely innovative work and helped open up San Francisco government,” Craigslist founder Craig Newmark told the San Francisco Chronicle today.

In addition, Michael Beno has also joined Proof as a director. He was most recently with Ruder Finn. Proof hired B.L. Ochman as its managing director in January.

For those keeping score at home, so far this year B-M has hired a new digital employee once every ten days.

NPR “On the Media” host, AdAge columnist and author Bob Garfield will keynote the annual PRSA conference this fall.

Garfield gained some extra notoriety by publicly shaming Comcast with the launch of ComcastMustDie.com in 2007.

The site launched around the same time coincidentally, that Comcast’s Frank Eliason started dealing with blogger blowback with a small team of people internally, which led to the launch of the now massive ComcastCares Twitter feed (26,495 followers and 32,893 updates as of the time of this post).

Other PRSA keynoters in recent years include Craig Newmark, Mia Farrow, Mitch Albom and “America’s PublicistKaren Hughes.

Gawker Media’s Denton: Magazine and Newspaper Reporters “Don’t Adjust Well to Working Online”

Earlier this week we asked the question, “Do Former Journalists Make Good PR Pros?” which generated a healthy debate in the comments section of that post.

At least one media company owner believes “traditional media” journalists don’t make for good online reporters. At I Want Media’s The Future of Media: 2009 panel yesterday, Gawker Media’s Nick Denton told attendees:

“It’s very, very tempting right now to say, ‘Ok, let’s go out and let’s hire 50 of the best people from newspapers and magazines…” but went on to say, “they don’t adjust well to working online.”

FishbowlNY’s Amanda Earnst attended the panel, which also featured former Star magazine editor Bonnie Fuller, The Wall Street Journal‘s deputy managing editor Alan Murray, Craigslist.org founder Craig Newmark and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. Read her take here.
