Same Channel, Different Show: America Distrusts Mass Media More Than Congress

don't trust the corporate mediaDoes the national news industry read its own press? While networks are busy creating fancy holograms and littering the screen like ESPN during the NFL Draft, America cares less and less about what they actually have to say.

Gallup just came out with a poll that proves it: distrust in national news is an historic low.

According to the poll, things aren’t in a good way. Americans’ confidence in the media’s ability to report the news “fully, accurately and fairly” has returned to its previous all-time low of 40 percent.

Be it due to fear or loathing, people do not believe what the media folks are sharing. No matter what talking point decorates the teleprompter, many viewers feel like they might as well flip the channel.

Should we?

THIS JUST IN: NBC News Pays for Matt Lauer’s What?!

THIS JUST IN 2It is no secret that today’s national “morning show” hosts make a very fine living.

Sure, they get benefits of modeling clothes, makeup, and shoes, so it’s not like they are paying for that stuff. Then, they are given a seven- or eight-figure income to look beautiful, act common, and fake sincerity during stories, as in “And our prayers go out to you and yours.”

As if they are genuflecting in mass or mosque for your mom because of a tweet you sent their way.

These facts notwithstanding, the people at NBC News have waaaaaay too much residual money on their hands. Cases in point: Chelsea Clinton and Matt Lauer.

Oy Vey!

STUDY: Government Approval Ratings Hit All-Time Lows

uncle-sam-gun-to-headIf you watch the news for any amount of time, you may notice that our government has a perception problem that transcends any intra-party squabbles: pretty much no one has a good thing to say about the U.S. government, the people running it, or even those most affected by it.

Now, the latest related poll by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, adds to the dogpile.

In the national poll, we discover that President Obama’s approval rating has plummeted to its lowest ever position at 41 percent. Even worse, 71 percent of Americans believe this country is headed in the wrong direction.

Good news though: the approval rating for Congress has increased from 11 to 14 percent, so there’s that.

Le sigh.

America Officially Hates Sarah Palin

palin_mouthSurveys are fun because they offer insights into America’s red, white, and blue soul. This is especially true when the surveys are about divisive things like politics, healthcare, or Donald Trump’s fabled “Trump Toupee.”

Take Sarah Palin.

See there? The name alone makes hairs stand up, stomachs turn and glasses go foggy. So why is she in the news … again? A survey.

While it’s not like Sarah Palin is on a media hiatus or anything, she’s not as visible as she would like. And thanks to this NBC News/WSJ poll, we know she is still more vocal than anyone would like.

Bad News: Poll Shows Confidence in News Media Very Low, Right Above Congress

we hate TV

500 channels and nothing on…

There is nothing more mesmerizing than our ability to ignore fact, figure, and logic.

Collectively, there are groups of people who can be so dense that one would think every highfalutin group walks around in wifebeaters drenched in sweat and beer stains. For example: It is no secret that the current Congressional body has the lowest approval rating in U.S. history, yet there they are, re-elected and sitting pretty.

Glowing in the spotlight of that single-digit love is one other group that just can’t take a hint: National Network News.

The numbers we have to share have nothing to do with ratings, but they probably should.

Chelsea Clinton Makes $600K from NBC News Because That’s Fair

Hillary And Chelsea Clinton Speak Host Discussion On Girls And WomenPaging Jill Abramson. You may want to add this chick to your hit list.

In a world where networks with too much money hire people with too few qualifications (but a skosh of notoriety), there’s Chelsea Clinton.

Mind you, this is also a world in which Jill Abramson can be the former executive editor of The New York Times, have tons of responsibility, and fight to make $475,000 while her predecessor Bill Keller made $559,000. And that’s to run one of the nation’s leading newspapers.

Back to Clinton, who received $600,000 for only her last name one month of reporting “acuity” on the now-defunct “Rock Center with Brian Williams.”

Your move, America.

No Joke: ‘The Colbert Report’ Voted ‘Most Informative U.S. News Source’

colbert better than news

Hey national news, you think your ratings are bad now?

I haven’t seen a survey but I would be willing to bet that most journos and PR peeps watch Comedy Central … for news.

Why? How much drive-by shootings, domestic disturbances, child abuse cases, political scandals, and weather reports can one person take in a day? We need some levity so we read blogs with a tinge of snark and watch TV with a bit more.

Thank you Comedy Central for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

While they joke wonderfully about the world around us, they educate America by giving a no-nonsense approach to what “breaking news” obfuscates on a minute-by-minute basis. And now, there’s proof: Stephen Colbert has been voted the “most informative U.S. news source.”

NBC News Continues its Hack Attack Form of Checkbook Journalism Because Ratings

interactive newsroom

Ironic what the NBC Interactive Newsroom chose to adorn its wall, huh?

Ratings (n.) — The source of all things monetary in media; The force by which all journalists show their worth the bigwigs in the corner offices; The reason media can suck.

When I was in a newsroom, there was just about nothing I wouldn’t do to get people to listen to what I had to say. Hell, in PR, it’s the same way. I’ll beg, borrow or steal borrow some more to help my clients get what they deserve and help tell their story. However, the people at NBC News, go a skosh past unethical into a whole new realm of paparazzi.
