Roll Call: Outreach Strategies, 23andME, Cumulus and More

Outreach Strategies, LLC (OS) announced today that the firm’s senior leadership is expanding with the hires of Elizabeth Curwen as vice president and Evan Carlson as account manager. A seasoned public affairs practitioner with 20 years of experience in working with corporations, trade associations and nonprofits on environment, health and related public policy issues, Curwen comes to OS from Spitfire Strategies, where she had been leading major client engagements for the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Ford Foundation and nonprofits across the country. As a vice president at Spitfire, she helped foundations articulate clear strategies and worked with grantees to implement that vision through strategic communication. Curwen has run national and state-based thought leadership, media and issue campaigns at a variety of agencies and associations, including the American Chemistry Council and APCO Worldwide. DNA ancestry company 23andMe has hired Angela Wonson as VP of communications. She has been in the role for about five weeks. Wonson is leading the company’s corporate communications, media relations, investor relations, and internal communications activities. Wonson replaced Christine Castro, who left to become SVP for communications at CBS Interactive, in the role. After beginning her career in TV news, Wonson gained experience in healthcare communications in roles at the Cleveland Clinic and Intuitive Surgical, where she said she was driven by work that had an effect at “the human level and on a societal level.” Most recently, Wonson was VP of communications and senior media adviser at Intuitive Surgical. Previously, she was EVP and director of healthcare media at Weber Shandwick and SVP for national health media relations at Edelman. Ketchum Sports & Entertainment, a division of Ketchum, has expanded its leadership team with the hire of Eryn McVerry as a senior vice president. Based in KSE’s New York office, McVerry will play a critical role on some of the firm’s largest accounts, including Gillette and IBM. With a career spanning multiple agencies and a number of Fortune 500 brands, McVerry has more than 13 years of experience in developing multifaceted campaigns across disciplines, with a particular emphasis on sports marketing and marketing to men. McVerry has delivered brand strategy and sports marketing partnership programs for brands that include the U.S. Army, Motorola, Time Warner Cable and Tottenham Hotspur. In her previous role, McVerry was an integral part of Ogilvy & Mather’s work as creative agency of record for NASCAR, spearheading the inter-agency team that launched the largest brand campaign in the sport’s history. Cohn & Wolfe has appointed Mischa Dunton as managing director of Cohn & Wolfe San Francisco. Dunton will be responsible for leading the San Francisco office, overseeing the day-to-day operations, employee development, client relations, and business development. She will also serve as senior client counselor for Cohn & Wolfe’s West Coast clients, including three in the agency’s top twenty. Dunton has nearly 20 years of experience in communications and brand management, specifically within the technology, corporate and consumer sectors.  She joins Cohn & Wolfe from APCO Worldwide, where she was deputy managing director and senior vice president. At APCO, Dunton was a founding member of the agency’s San Francisco office, responsible for a range of clients including Red Bull, Gap Inc., PayPal and Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In organization.  Dunton’s experience includes strategy and programming for market launches, momentum and brand campaigns, M&As, change leadership and issues management. Nielsen Holdings N.V. announced that Katie Burke will join Nielsen as its executive vice president of Marketing and Communications, effective Jan. 27. In this role, Burke will have global responsibility for Nielsen’s marketing and communications functions, including internal and external communications, content development, digital marketing, industry relations and events. She will be based in Wilton, Conn. Burke brings nearly 20 years of experience to Nielsen, most recently serving as the global chair of Public Affairs at Edelman. Prior to Edelman, Burke held several major roles in U.S. politics, including director of television news in the White House. She also served as communications director for major U.S. political campaigns, including the Rudy Giuliani Presidential Campaign and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s successful re-election campaign in California. GolinHarris announced the appointment of Mark O’Connor as executive director, National Media Relations. Based in New York, O’Connor will lead the agency’s national media relations team and provide strategic media relations guidance to clients across multiple practices. Additionally, O’Connor will serve as co-leader of the agency’s connector community, alongside Jeff Beringer, global Digital Practice leader. The agency’s connector community is responsible for sharing clients’ stories across earned, shared, owned and paid media. Outreach Strategies, LLC, (OS) announced the hire of Alison Omens, former AFL-CIO director of Media Outreach and deputy director of Public Affairs, as vice president. In Omens’ previous role at the AFL-CIO, she oversaw strategic communications and all national, state and local media strategy in the political, legislative and economic arena. Omens was responsible for developing and supervising a broad communications network with representatives for all fifty states. (Release)

Allison+Partners announced that Jeremy Rosenberg has been appointed senior vice president of digital media responsible for leading and evolving the agency’s digital offerings globally. Rosenberg’s career spans nearly two decades of digital and social media marketing that will serve the agency’s existing and prospective roster well. Rosenberg joins Allison+Partners from Cohn & Wolfe, where he led integrated communications programs for such clients as Walmart, Panasonic and Nokia. Ogilvy & Mather has integrated Ogilvy Public Relations‘ healthcare practice with its global healthcare marketing communications group, Ogilvy CommonHealth Worldwide. It appointed Kate Cronin, who has led Ogilvy PR’s New York office and also serving as global healthcare practice leader, to oversee the integration of the PR unit into the new offering.
