Vanessa Freidman Is Your New York Times Fashion Critic

vanessa-friedman-225The search is over: The New York Times has named Vanessa Freidman, currently chief fashion critic at Financial Times, as its new arbiter of all things style.

This announcement, of course, follows the January resignation of longtime fashion chief Cathy Horyn, who left the paper for personal reasons, and the more recent departure of fellow critic Suzy Menkes, who departed the recently rebranded International New York Times for a a spot at Vogue.

Times executive editor Jill Abramson says:

“I’m thrilled to welcome Vanessa to the Times.  She is the perfect journalist to be our leading voice on global fashion.”

Marc Jacobs Wants to Save Miley Cyrus from Herself

Or at least that’s what we (and the Financial Times, registration req’d) gathered from his latest ad campaign.

She’s 50% more emo now, see? She even wears her sunglasses at night so she can hide her red eyes. Jazzy!

FT thinks this move amounts to “strategy at the highest level” and that it might be a win for both parties since “fashion loves a high/low moment” and Miley’s itching for a little redemption among the well-heeled crowd. It worked out well for Posh Spice, but how many image makeovers can one former teenybopper have?

We doubt Marc has Miley’s best interests in mind. In fact, we have photographic evidence that he values self-promotion above all other things…

Has Fashion Week Lost Its PR Luster?

Today is the first day of New York Fashion Week, which has some asking the question: has the event grown too big for its own size 2 capri pants?

It’s a serious query, because anyone with fashion clients knows it’s the industry’s biggest event. This year’s affair, however, has already been plagued with problems: the fact that it falls during High Holy Days forces Jewish designers and employees to “choose between the shul and the runway“, and a lawsuit filed over the fact that its 2010 move to Lincoln Center restricts access to that (public) park will almost certainly force the whole undertaking to move in the near future.

For a publicist, however, the issue is this: is Fashion Week still the best promo forum for new collections and designers? How can editorial voices be heard when Everybody Who’s Anybody is there?

Roll Call: Saatchi & Saatchi, ‘The Financial Times’ and ‘Adweek’

Michael Lee has been promoted to CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi Greater China. Michael, currently president and COO for Greater China, has over 20 years agency experience, most of it in China. He has played a key role in growing Saatchi & Saatchi with a range of new business wins and most recently being awarded ‘Creative Agency of the Year’ by China Advertising Magazine and R3. In this role Michael will lead the Saatchi & Saatchi offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Guangzhou. Michael, who is based in Shanghai, will report to Chris Foster, Chairman and CEO for Asia-Pacific, based in Singapore. (Release)

The Financial Times announced the appointment of Darcy Keller as global communications director, responsible for all external and internal communications across FT Group, effective August 1. Reporting to FT Group CEO John Ridding, Keller also joins the FT Executive Board, which oversees the company’s global strategy and performance. She will relocate from New York to London to lead a global communications team based in London, New York and Hong Kong. Keller brings extensive media and communications experience to the role and has held a number of senior positions at the FT since joining in 2007, including deputy director of global communications, head of the global press office and head of communications in the Americas. Since 2010, she has served on the company’s Senior Management and Digital Executive teams, responsible for the FT’s digital and mobile strategy and growth in recent years. (Release)

Suzan Gursoy has been promoted from interim publisher of Adweek to publisher. She had the “interim” tag since February. Prior to that, Gursoy served as Adweek’s integrated advertising director, from 2010 to 2013. Before Gursoy’s time at Adweek, she oversaw business development for WWD. (FishbowlNY)
