Twitter Fight: Orbitz vs. Priceline
Today in social media brand wars, two longtime competitors face off on Twitter…with (sort of) hilarious results. In case you didn’t know, both @Priceline and @Orbitz claim to offer travelers the lowest available prices on tickets, rental cars and other accessories by “negotiating” with providers.
Priceline recently started an election-themed “Negotiator for President” promo campaign with the usual prizes and such–and Orbitz ran a similar “Vacation Party” campaign. Let the social media mockery begin:
“Hey #Negotiator4President, glad you threw your hat in the ring. Mine was there first. And it’s a sombrero.” – Walt #OrbitzVacationParty
— Orbitz (@Orbitz) November 1, 2012
It only got sillier from there.
Nice try @orbitz’s candidate, Walt, but no one wears a sombrero like the Negotiator. Game On. #Negotiator4President twitter.com/priceline/stat… — Priceline.com (@priceline) November 1, 2012
The #Negotiator4President guarantees ‘No Deal Left Behind’. Walt of @orbitz can’t even guarantee he’ll wear a shirt. twitter.com/priceline/stat… — Priceline.com (@priceline) November 1, 2012
The campaign and the faux competition many prove to be a branding win for both companies, which recently suffered some very bad stock news. Lest we take it all too seriously, Orbitz reassured its followers that the campaign was really all about the importance of voting.
It’s been fun, @priceline. One thing our two fake candidates can agree on: voting’s for realz. Do it next Tuesday. #OrbitzVacationParty

What do we think? Was this a successful social media interaction between rivals or just a couple of guys messing around? Whatever the verdict, we certainly appreciate the Orbitz spokesman’s capacity for self-mockery:
So you can play dress up, @priceline Negotiator. Let’s see you dress down. #OrbitzVacationParty twitter.com/Orbitz/status/…
