Janay Rice Speaks, Blames Media for Family’s ‘Nightmare’

CNNRiceThe wife of former NFL player Ray Rice spoke out today via Instagram a day after her husband was released by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL following TMZ’s release of elevator footage showing him knocking her unconscious.

The Baltimore Sun reports on Janay Rice defending her husband against the “nightmare” caused by the media and public.

“I woke up this morning feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I’m mourning the death of my closest friend,” Janay Rice wrote. “But to have to accept the fact that it’s reality is a nightmare in itself. No one knows the pain that [the] media & unwanted options from the public has caused my family. To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret every day is a horrible thing. To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his ass [off] for all his life just to gain ratings is horrific. THIS IS OUR LIFE! What don’t you all get. If your intentions were to hurt us, embarrass us, make us feel alone, take all happiness away, you’ve succeeded on so many levels. Just know we will continue to grow & show the world what real love is! Ravensnation we love you!”

Last night at 8pmET, Anderson Cooper and Chris Hayes both led their programs covering Rice’s release and suspension.

August 2014 Ratings: MSNBC Up in Primetime, Down in Total Day During Busy News Month

MSNBC did not experience the growth that Fox News, CNN and even HLN did in the month of August. The network was down -1% in viewers and down -14% in the demo for total day viewing, falling to third place in total viewers, behind CNN, and fourth place in the demo, behind HLN.

The ratings for August 2014 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 571,000 Total Viewers / 152,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 342,000 Total Viewers / 102,000 A25-54

MSNBC did see primetime viewership growth (+10%) and edged CNN in Monday-Friday primetime (8-11pmET) by just 1,000 viewers. “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” all finished #2 in their timeslots among total viewers. All three shows also saw year-over-year growth after what was a bruising August, 2013. Still, the network was down in the primetime demo (-14%).

Cable News Primetime Covers Team USA World Cup Elimination

Cuomo Brazil Last night, several primetime cable news shows covered Team USA’s valiant World Cup comeback attempt against Belgium.

At the end of “Anderson Cooper 360,” substitute host John Berman interviewed “New Day” anchor Chris Cuomo, who reported live from Brazil donning a number 1 jersey.

He said the jersey was “representative of one nation, one team.” “The U.S. soccer team has captured the hearts of the country the way it never had before.” Don Lemon led “CNN Tonight” at 10pmET with World Cup coverage, interviewing CNN’s Brazil Bureau Chief Shasta Darlington and producer Paul Vercammen, whose family is Belgian.

MSNBC’s primetime lineup covered Team USA’s defeat.  “All In with Chris Hayes” sent show producers to a New York City bar to get fan reaction following the loss.  Rachel Maddow opened her show making the connection between professional soccer players faking injuries during games and U.S. politicians faking being “grievously injured.” “That is basic pee-wee league American political strategy.”
