Erin Burnett Fact-Checks Israeli Official’s Allegations that CNN Coverage is Biased

DermerCNNOn her show last night, Erin Burnett followed up on a segment from Thursday’s “OutFront,” where Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer called out CNN for biased coverage of the war in Gaza. Burnett invited Dermer to come for Friday’s show to, in part to disprove some of his assertions, but he couldn’t come on. So Burnett fact-checked his comments.

At one point, Dermer says, ”I’ve been listening to two hours of reports on CNN. I have seen split screens, horrible pictures that any decent human being would be horrified by. I think that that does a disservice to your viewers to not give them the context they need to make these judgments.”

Burnett then played a clip from part of that prior two hours during which Wolf Blitzer did report on how the U.N. demanded that Hamas stop endangering civilians “by placing weapons in U.N. schools.”

The fact-checking continued…

Who Makes Fareed Zakaria Nervous?

He hosts his own CNN show, but it was an interview with Jon Stewart that gave Fareed Zakaria jitters.

“I’m a little nervous because I realize I might be speaking to my future boss,” Zakaria jokingly said to Stewart at the beginning of an interview Thursday night. He was referring to Stewart’s “Let’s Buy CNN” campaign. “I hope that you end up getting CNN. I think it would be a fascinating challenge for you,” he continued.  And how would Stewart fill the remaining airtime left after “The Daily Show’s” two hours per week. “I’ll just let Wolf Blitzer fill in.”

Alisyn Camerota Fills in on ‘New Day’

Alisyn Camerota pulled up an anchor chair on CNN’s “New Day” this morning. “Kate’s on assignment, we welcome Alisyn Camerota,” said Chris Cuomo who is just back from covering the aftermath of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight 17 in Ukraine.

The show led off with Wolf Blitzer in Tel Aviv, who also gave a shout-out to Camerota. “Good to have you on our team,” Blitzer said. Camerota joined CNN two weeks ago, after 16 years with Fox News.

Would Michael Bloomberg Buy CNN?

cavutobloombergFollowing his fiery interview on CNN, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was interviewed by Neil Cavuto on his Fox News show. In this interview, CNN came up as a topic of discussion. As 21st Century Fox chairman Rupert Murdoch looks to acquire Time Warner, in which case CNN would have to be spun off, Cavuto asked the finance and media mogul if he’d be interested in buying CNN.

“I can’t think of why we would be interested in buying CNN. We’ve got a business, we’ve got to reinvest in our business and work very hard. I just did an interview in the same building with Wolf Blitzer on CNN. A lot of people like CNN, a lot of people watch it. Ted Turner had a great concept when he started it.”

“You never say never, but in this case I can say probably never.”

Michael Bloomberg to Wolf Blitzer: Tone of Your Question ‘Insulting to America’

BloombergFormer New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg isn’t happy with the FAA’s decision to temporarily ban flights to and from Israel, and in Jerusalem this afternoon, he was also unhappy with Wolf Blitzer‘s line of questioning.

“Don’t be ridiculous…why would you think that?” Bloomberg said, responding to Blitzer asking if he thought political motivations factored into the flight ban.

“It’s an outrage for you to accuse one of our agencies…” Bloomberg said before Blitzer interrupted, “I’m not accusing anyone, I’m just asking.” Bloomberg then talked over Blitzer. “By asking the question you’re implying that our government does things for political reasons–and maybe every once in awhile they do–but it’s your job to prove it,” Bloomberg continued. “Just the allegation against our government, I personally take as an offense…just the tone of the question of trying to create dissension; it’s insulting to America.”

Eight minutes later, Bloomberg popped up on Fox News’ “Your World with Neil Cavuto.” After speaking about the FAA ban, Cavuto asked Bloomberg if he’ll be running for president in 2016. “No,” the former mayor simply responded.

Networks Pivot From Ukraine to Gaza as Israel Launches Ground Offensive

Shortly before 4pmET, cable and broadcast networks turned from Ukraine — where they have spent most of the day reporting on Malyasia Airlines flight 17, which was shot down near the Russian border this morning — to Gaza, where Israel has just launched a ground offensive after several days of violence there.

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos was the only broadcast anchor still on the air when news of the ground invasion broke. “We’re just getting reports now from our Hamish MacDonald that Israeli military confirms to ABC news that the ground phase of the war in Gaza has indeed begun,” Stephanopoulos said. “Another huge crisis escalating at the same time as we’re getting all of these reports of the downed airliner.”

On cable, Shepard Smith continues to anchor from the Fox News Deck, joined by John Huddy from Gaza. Jake Tapper is anchoring on CNN, joined by Wolf Blitzer in Jerusalem. CNN’s Ben Wedeman and Karl Penhaul also reported from Gaza during the 4pmET hour. Alex Wagner is anchoring on MSNBC.

MSNBC and CNN have mostly focused on the plane during the 4pmET hour, while Fox News has stayed with the Gaza story.

>Update: As an out of breath John Huddy voiced a running eyewitness account on Fox News, describing what he sees and hears, Smith said, “John Huddy is giving us a view like you won’t see on any channel in this world. I’m watching all of them. And nobody has this view, and nobody has this eye on this, except John Huddy.” Watch here.

The Ticker: LeBron’s Choice, Robot’s View Wolf’s Run

  • A robot journalist is being considered as a co-host for “The View.” Okay, maybe not. But another cable news name has surfaced to round out the cast in the fall.

  • Wolf Blitzer and his crew, reporting from Israel, had to make a run for a bomb shelter when sirens went off warning of an impending rocket attack. Blitzer talked about it this morning:

The Afternoon Ticker: Blitzer, Aereo, O’Brien

  • Wolf Blitzer will anchor “The Situation Room” from Israel tonight. He will interview Dan Shapiro, the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, in the 5pmET hour.

  • Aereo filed a letter yesterday in the U.S. District Court of New York saying it intends to continue “as a cable system.” TVSpy has more.
