Professional Experience

Versatile business reporter with a strong sideline in marketing communications. As a reporter, I've covered technology, commercial real estate, mutual fund marketing and the retail industry. My B2B and B2C features have appeared in national and regional magazines. As a marketing writer, I've written blogs, newsletters, op-eds (often ghost-written for execs), scripts and press kits, for clients in software, consumer products, nonprofits and aerospace. I'm an eagle-eyed copy editor, although I try not to be obnoxious about it, and I'm in Denver, Colorado, midway between the coasts, for maximum access across time zones. Are you looking for Lisa Everitt, by any chance? That's me too.

Blogs

In this piece, written for my agency's blog, I discussed lessons learned from nearly two decades of online community management. We did social media before people knew that's what it was.
I ghost-wrote blog posts for Qwest's Business Markets Group, exploring topics of interest to their enterprise customers.

Business Journalism

The retail beat in 2008 was one piece of bad news after another.
This story was the opener in a package about food safety legislation that appeared in Natural Foods Merchandiser's 2010 online legislative roundup. Take a look at other pages from this package at http://bit.ly/gIsJAc and http://bit.ly/hOzJx1 (bill summaries) and http://bit.ly/he9hKc (Q&A).
So I looked for success stories, like this one.

Feature Stories

This is half of a cover feature for my alumni magazine. Even though it's old, and one page of the scan is hinky, I love this story because the premise is so counter-intuitive: Wesleyan graduates, holders of elite liberal arts degrees, working in the food business. I got to eat my way across the country in the process of reporting it. Bonus: John Hickenlooper '74, profiled here as co-founder of the first brewpub in Denver, served two terms as mayor and is our governor now. You can see hints of a political future in the story.
I also wrote a weekly regional travel column for the Post, called "Way Gone," until budget cuts did it in.
"Intentional Gardens" are planted to achieve a specific culinary goal. Last year I did several of these short stories, including a pie garden, a ratatouille garden and plants for Middle Eastern cuisine.

Marketing Communications

Caribbean Solutions is an eco-friendly, biodegradable sunscreen. The public relations campaign that began with this release led to placements in green blogs and national magazines, including National Geographic Traveler and Budget Travel. I carried out a strong media relations and trade show campaign to piggyback on a published study that found a link between chemicals in drugstore sunscreens and damage to coral reefs. Most importantly, we helped achieve the client's goal -- to widen distribution from resort poolside concessions to national retailers in the naturals space, such as Whole Foods, Target and Vitamin Cottage.
