Professional Experience

I have recently begun freelancing as a copy editor in the book publishing industry, and I am seeking to expand to work projects with other publishing houses, the academic and news media, think tanks and NGOs and professional associations. My work as a staff and freelance writer has encompassed national newspapers, consumer magazines, local newspapers and documentary film companies. I recently finished my first book, which involves German covert operations in the Middle East during World War I, which I had to copyedit myself (a tough job because of the cornucopia of transliterated foreign words and British stylistic rules). I've also worked as a magazine photo editor and photo archivist, and I still freelance as a photo researcher for the magazine and book publishing market.

These are photographs I have taken on my traveling throughout the Middle East from 2004 to 2013. Locations were Israel and the Occupied Territories, Istanbul, Syria, Ethiopia and Egypt, as well as urban locations in the US including Washington, DC, Philadelphia and Cleveland.
This article described a massive rescue operation by American intelligence that ferried 500+ downed Allied airmen out of Serbia in 1944.
Using Abraham Lincoln's visit to the conquered Confederate capitol at Richmond in the spring of 1865, I discussed his reconstruction policy, which was much less punitive than the reconstruction policy of his successor Andrew Johnson.
Multiple random and chilling personal connections between the Lincoln and Booth families began proliferating long before the fatal encounter at Ford Theater in April 1865. This article describes those in detail.
PT Barnum circus performers Tom Thumb and Lavinia Warren attracted tremendous national media attention when they got married in New York in 1863, making this event the forerunner of the modern celebrity wedding craze.
Rwandan Anglican bishop John Rucyahana, a Tutsi, describes his experience crossing the line of enmity to preach to Hutu genocide perpetrators in Rwandan jails.
This book, which I worked on from 2013 to 2018, presents the diary entries and official reports of Curt Prufer, a German spy and propagandist active in the Ottoman Empire during World War I as one of the point men for implementing Germany's "holy war" strategy. This strategy sought to incite Muslims in rival empires to revolt against their imperial masters in order to divert enemy troops away from Europe, giving Germany and its ally the Turks the victory. It failed, and opened the door to the century of Middle East violence we are still dealing with today.
I wrote the essay to accompany the DVD package of a documentary on the life of Teddy Roosevelt.
I wrote this 12K-word overview essay to accompany the DVD of the documentary on the American Civil War.
German Foreign Office official Fritz Kolbe proved to be one America's best intelligence source inside Nazi Germany during World War II. I wrote this article about his work spying for the Allies.
