Location
This position will be working at the Rifle Correctional Center. This posting may be used to fill future vacancies at this location.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Answer requests for information by conducting reference interviews, determining where to locate the desired information and executing the search;
- Provide instruction to library users on information literacy and library skills; Inform library users about availability of interlibrary loan; screen requests for compatibility with selection criteria; instruct patrons on loan procedures; search incoming books for content and contraband;
- Provide library service to inmates in Restricted Housing/diagnostic units who cannot visit the library;
- Recommend materials for addition to the library collection to meet the educational, informational and recreational needs of the inmate population;
- Assign classification numbers and subject headings for new materials by copying existing catalog records and modifying to comply with Dewey Decimal Classification, Abridged and Sears List of Subject Headings;
- Monitor behavior of inmate library users, enforce security regulations and library rules, call for the ejection of problem inmates, write reports on rule infractions, and act on resolving conflicts between offenders;
- Prepare annual funding requests;
- Report annual library expenditures;
- Compose and distribute monthly narrative and statistical reports;
- Supervise inmate library clerks through the assignment of tasks, monitoring progress and workflow, scheduling work, establishing work standards, and checking the final product;
- Provide initial and ongoing training for inmate library clerks;
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Three (3) years of technical or high‑level clerical experience. Technical work is defined as skilled work in the practical application of specialized techniques, procedures, practices, or methods in order to accomplish tasks. High‑level clerical experience includes document creation, word processing; creation and revision of office procedures; compiling and formatting content for program materials such as annual reports and newsletters; screening documents and supporting information to determine eligibility, authenticity, or identity; accounting for the unit's allotted funds by authorizing operating expenditures.
OR:
A combination of college or university coursework in Criminal Justice, Business Management, Public Administration, Information Science, or a related field and related experience as defined above equal to three (3) years. - Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant technical experience with the State of Colorado;
- Knowledge of library services;
- Experience using an integrated library system (ILS);
- Experience selecting, processing, shelving, and/or maintaining library materials;
- Experience working with a diverse population.

Conditions of Employment
- Must be 21 years of age;
- Possess a valid driver’s license; drivers must maintain a valid, non-restricted Colorado driver license, obey traffic laws, and maintain a safe driving record;
- Possess a high school diploma or GED;
- Have no felony convictions;
- Must be legally eligible to work in the United States;
- Must successfully complete the six‑week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including English comprehension, competency assessments, and defensive tactics exams;
- Must be able to complete Defensive Tactics requirements, including physical abilities, use of baton, and other defensive techniques;
- Must be able to see and hear well to observe, address, and respond to potential breaches in safety and security;
- Must be willing and able to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays;
- Must be willing to work on-site at Rifle Correctional Center and be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during training and on assignment;
- TB screening is required upon hire.
Additional Requirements
Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Applicants with criminal charges must provide official disposition of any charges. All new employees are subject to drug testing and ongoing random tests.
