This position assists adult offenders classified at various security levels, including disabled offenders, regarding the use of legal materials and the selection and preparation of legal documents; monitor daily operations and ensure the security of assigned facility law libraries to maintain a secure work environment within a penal setting; provide alternative legal access to offenders who do not have physical access to a law library; act as a liaison for offenders and staff; provide photocopies of legal materials; receive, log, deliver all photocopied loan material; log and prepare loan sheets, enter statistical information into computer to facilitate monthly reports; monitor and manage offender legal access computers, including legal research programs and word processing; provide notary services; supervise, hire and terminate offender clerks; provide appropriate services to offenders on behavioral management plans; interview and provide assistance to offenders pursuant to program policies and procedures; may be responsible for more than one facility law library; perform other duties/projects as assigned by supervisor.

Job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide legal research assistance to offenders and staff to find proper legal authority and help resolve legal problems
  • Monitor and manage offender legal access computers and software
  • Identify, categorize, log, and deliver material to offenders to provide access to the courts
  • Collect, compile, and enter data to facilitate monthly statistical reports on offender access and related metrics
  • Maintain and log data on supply and equipment use to ensure compliance with policies and accurate inventories
  • Search law libraries for contraband to maintain a secure environment
  • Other duties/projects as assigned by supervisor

Note: Occasional travel required to provide coverage for other CDOC facilities throughout the state. Minimum Qualifications

Education/Licensure/Experience: Paralegal certificate obtained through an American Bar Association (ABA) approved program or an accredited institution. Copies must be attached to your application to receive credit.

Substitutions: Two (2) years of work experience in a paralegal capacity with legal research, drafting legal documents, and data gathering may substitute for the certificate. This experience must be described in your Work Experience section.

Necessary Special Requirement: Requires a paralegal certificate within 9 months of hiring. A Juris Doctorate may substitute for the certificate (attach unofficial transcripts).

Other Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record
  • High school diploma or GED
  • No felony convictions and eligibility to work in the United States
  • Ability to complete six-week CDOC Basic Training and Defensive Tactics requirements
  • Willingness to travel and work various shifts
  • TB screening required
  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during training and assignment
