Summary

This position assists adult offenders classified at various security levels regarding the use of legal materials and the selection and preparation of legal documents; monitor the daily operations and insure the security of assigned facility law libraries; provide alternative legal access to offenders who do not have physical access to a law library; act as a liaison for offenders and staff; provide photocopies of legal materials; receive, log, and deliver all photocopied loan material; log and prepare loan sheets and enter data for monthly reports; monitor offender legal access computers and word processing; provide notary services; supervise offender clerks; provide services to offenders on behavioral management plans; interview and assist offenders per program policies and procedures; and may be responsible for more than one facility law library. All other duties/projects as assigned by supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal research assistance to offenders and staff; analyze legal problems to resolve issues and identify frivolous issues.
  • Monitor and manage offender legal access computers, including legal research programs and word processing.
  • Identify, categorize, log, and deliver material submitted for photocopying to provide access to the courts; provide legal materials upon request.
  • Collect, compile, and enter data to support monthly statistical reports on offender access, photocopy usage, and loan activity.
  • Maintain and log data on supplies and equipment; ensure compliance with program policies and accurate inventories.
  • Search law libraries for contraband to maintain a secure environment.
  • Other duties/projects as assigned by supervisor.

Note: Occasional travel required to provide coverage for other CDOC facilities statewide.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Licensure/Experience: Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program or accredited institution. Copies must be attached to your application to receive credit.
Substitutions: Two (2) years of paralegal work including legal research, drafting legal documents, and data gathering may substitute for the certificate. This experience must be described in the work experience section of the application.

Necessary Special Requirement: Requires a paralegal certificate obtained through an ABA-approved program or accredited institution within 9 months of hiring. A Juris Doctorate may substitute for the certificate with unofficial transcripts attached.

  • Experience interpreting complex rules, regulations, and procedures
  • Advanced knowledge of laws, regulations, court procedures, and agency rules
