Job Description

General Summary
The Senior Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, detailed, and competitive estimates for site work and construction projects. This role requires strong technical expertise, the ability to interpret plans and specifications, and the judgment to assess risk, scope, and cost impacts. The Senior Estimator collaborates with project managers, field leadership, subcontractors, and clients to ensure estimates align with project goals and company standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Preconstruction & Estimating
Review and analyze project plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and addenda.
Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs for earthwork, utilities, grading, paving, and related scopes.
Develop accurate cost estimates including labor, equipment, materials, subcontractor pricing, and production rates.
Identify constructability issues, project risks, and value-engineering opportunities.
Prepare and maintain estimating templates, cost histories, and production data.
Build proposals, bid forms, and supporting documentation for submission.
Subcontractor & Vendor Coordination
Solicit, prequalify, and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes.
Review scope inclusions/exclusions and ensure coverage of all bid items.
Conduct scope clarification meetings and negotiate pricing when appropriate.
Project Collaboration
Work closely with project managers and field teams to ensure estimated production rates and project strategies are realistic.
Participate in project turnover meetings to communicate estimate intent, assumptions, and critical details.
Support operations teams with budget updates, change order pricing, and schedule input.
Technical & Administrative
Maintain strong knowledge of industry pricing trends, market conditions, and equipment capabilities.
Use estimating software and digital tools to develop takeoffs and cost models.
Ensure all estimates comply with company policies, safety standards, and client requirements.
Mentors and develops less-senior estimators by providing guidance, reviewing work for accuracy, sharing best practices, and supporting their professional growth.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred.
Minimum 58 years of estimating experience in site work, civil construction, or heavy equipment operations.
Strong understanding of excavation, grading, utilities, erosion control, and general civil construction methods.
Skills & Competencies
High proficiency in takeoff and estimating software (e.g., Agtek, HCSS, Bluebeam, Bid2Win, or similar).
Ability to read and interpret civil plans, profiles, and specifications.
Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
Excellent communication, organization, and time-management skills.
Ability to work independently and handle multiple deadlines.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
Work performed in an office environment with periodic visits to construction sites.
Ability to walk on uneven terrain, climb onto equipment, and observe field operations during site visits.
Exposure to outdoor conditions including weather, noise, and active construction environments.
