The Township of East Brunswick is accepting applications for a
Diesel Mechanic/Fabricator
within the Public Works Department. This position will perform a variety of advanced repairs and maintenance tasks involving various types of automotive equipment, trucks, vehicles, and heavy equipment. The
Diesel Mechanic Fabricator
will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. In addition, all duties are performed in accordance with Township safety codes and safe work practices which may require overtime. Main responsibilities include:
Working with employees to perform mechanical work on automobiles, trucks with other motorized and mechanical equipment powered by diesel engines, road construction, and maintenance equipment.
Assisting in training workers and demonstrating methods and techniques for repairing and maintaining vehicles using manual and mechanical tools and equipment.
Operating and inspecting machines or equipment to diagnose defects and determine the extent and kinds of required servicing and repairs.
Inspecting jobs before and after completion to ensure that they comply with Township procedures, and that proper work methods and safety practices are followed.
Assisting in the development and implementation of preventive maintenance schedules and programs for the vehicle fleet.
Demonstrating new equipment, evaluating performance, and making recommendations to management as to their purchase or lease.
Dismantling and reassembling equipment using hoists and hand tools.
Examining parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gages.
Replacing defective engines and subassemblies such as transmissions.
Ensuring that motor vehicles and equipment are maintained, repaired, and serviced.
Making service calls on equipment that breaks down on the road.
Maintaining records of equipment repair, maintenance, cost, and unit assignment.
Performing the duties of the Senior Mechanic/Fabricator in their absence.
This position is subjected to working long hours and/or shift work during snow operations, along with irregular hours during the winter.

Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Knowledge of methods used to correct motor vehicle and equipment malfunctions. Knowledge of organization or departmental programs that require the use of motor vehicles and equipment. Ability to diagnose motor vehicle and equipment malfunctions and assess the cost and feasibility of repairing motor vehicles and equipment. Ability to repair gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles, and related components including transmissions, brakes, drive trains, cooling and electrical systems, alignments, etc. Ability to use a computer, knowledge of PC operations and software, knowledge of internet use. Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot major problems on vehicles using computerized scanning equipment and computers in order to repair and maintain vehicles and equipment in the Township fleet. Ability to perform preventive maintenance for all assigned vehicles and equipment. Ability to perform stick welding, metal fabricating, MIG welding, and TIG welding. Ability to give assignments and instructions to staff and oversee the performance of their work. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and departments.
Special Requirements
EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of varied experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of varied types of motor vehicles and equipment and/or in the operation and maintenance of various types of construction equipment such as front‑end loaders, backhoes, rollers, graders, or other heavy trucks such as large dump trucks or sanitation trucks and/or in managing a large‑scale fleet of motor vehicles which entailed responsibility for the maintenance and servicing of such vehicles. EDUCATION: A high school diploma or equivalent. LICENSING & CERTIFICATION: Valid NJ driver’s license. CDL Class A license with a Bus Endorsement Certificate, or the ability to secure one with a satisfactory driving record. Forklift license or the ability to secure one.
