Job Description
Purpose Summary.
Operate a variety of light mobile equipment in transporting materials or in performing general construction and labor to build, repair, and maintain County roads.
Essential Duties
Perform a variety of construction/maintenance equipment operations, semi-skilled tasks, and manual labor as assigned in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, and drainage structures.
Operate a variety of trucks and equipment that are classified as light equipment (Class B CDL) in accordance with the New Mexico Department of Transportation, including but not limited to air compressor, jack hammer, pneumatic roller, backhoe, dump truck, asphalt distributor, chip spreader, mower, power broom, front end loader, forklift, steel wheel roller, etc., exercising all safety regulations and procedures.
Complete required daily logs and reports and submit them to the assigned supervisor.
Haul materials and transport vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks and equipment.
Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance work on assigned equipment; identify and report mechanical problems requiring additional repair to the assigned supervisor.
Work with and assist crews in resurfacing, oiling and patching, and grading and shaping roads.
Set forms for concrete head walls, and may work on bridge crew, project crew, maintenance crew, and sign crew.
Additional Duties
Other duties as assigned. Requires availability for irregular hours, overtime, and on‑call work during emergencies.
Qualifications
A. Education.
High School Diploma or GED required.
B. Experience.
Two (2) years full‑time general construction and/or light equipment operation experience.
C. Education/Experience Substitution.
In accordance with County Policy.
D. Licenses/Certifications.
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B upon hire. Specialized CDL endorsement may be required depending on assignment.
E. Other.
Background check, pre‑employment drug and alcohol test, and driving record check. Must comply with federal Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required by the Position
Knowledge of:
Safety regulations (OSHA).
Traffic laws pertaining to the operation of equipment performing road construction, repairs, and maintenance.
Skill in:
Perform minor preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
Safely use a variety of tools and equipment related to road construction repairs.
Operate and adjust varied equipment for purposes such as performing road construction and maintenance.
Ability to:
Effectively communicate orally and/or in writing.
Follow oral and written instructions; read gauges on equipment and be able to operate equipment effectively.
Maintain and wear personal protective equipment as necessary.
Abide by all department and county policies and procedures.
Compensation Range
$16.00 - $24.26
