Summary

CYP Assistants work directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well-cared for, and safe while participating in the CYP. They help children develop social skills such as making friends and conflict resolution; make healthy choices, choose nutritious snacks or appropriate recreational activities; build self-help and school readiness skills; and explore the environment around them.
Responsibilities

Curriculum: Develop, review and implement schedules and activity plans, incorporate observed needs of individual children, implement activities and special events, prepare options for children with special requirements, facilitate activities, model safety, fitness, health, nutrition, and arrange snacks or meals.
Indoor and Outdoor Environment: Prepare, arrange and maintain activity areas and materials, set up displays and bulletin boards, inventory equipment, secure supplies and facilities.
Interactions and Relationships: Create a program environment that sustains participant interest and promotes positive interactions with other children, youth and adults; use approved child guidance and youth development techniques.
Supervision of Children and Youth: Provide care, supervision, and accountability for program participants, maintain control of whereabouts and safety, supervise during daily schedule and special events, ensure authorized departure, observe for signs of illness, abuse or neglect and report as required.
Parent and Employee Communication: Interact professionally with employees, parents and local command personnel, provide verbal or written feedback, participate in conferences.
Assessment: Observe children, document developmental progression, use information for planning, participate in program evaluation with rating scales and tools.
Compliance: Assist in achieving and maintaining DoD certification and national accreditation or equivalent, ensure compliance with law and regulations, notify supervisor of health, fire and safety concerns.
Additional Responsibilities: Collect, maintain and report program participation data and perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older.
Complete required training certificates and maintain certifications as required by federal, state or national accreditation institutions.
Pass all applicable records and background checks.
Undergo pre-employment and random drug testing; a positive test results in removal from the position.
Pass a pre-employment physical, provide immunization evidence, be free of communicable diseases.
Employment contingent upon proof of education if not provided at time of application.
Marijuana use is illegal under federal law; a positive marijuana test results in job offer withdrawal and disqualification for 6 months.
Position is a Test Designated Position (TDP) with consent to pre-employment and random drug testing.
Starting May 7 2025, non-affiliated individuals must have a REAL-ID compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to access the installation.
Qualifications

Entry Level (CY-1702-01)

Communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing.
Follow verbal and written instructions.
Complete all Department of the Navy (DoN) training requirements within the specified timeframe.
Promote and foster effective working relationships with children, youth and coworkers.
Work cooperatively as a member of a team.
Intermediate Level (CY-1702-01)

Knowledge of basic child and youth development principles to meet physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development needs.
Implement developmentally appropriate principles and practices for high-quality direct care and education.
Interpret a curriculum or activity plan.
Follow written instructions, plan and organize, and work cooperatively as a team member.
Promote and foster effective working relationships with children, youth and coworkers.
Six (6) months of experience working with children or youth in a child and youth setting.
Target Level (CY-1702-02)

Knowledge of child and youth development principles to inform program response.
Implement developmentally appropriate child and youth development principles in individual or group settings.
Promote and foster effective working relationships with children, youth and coworkers.
Work cooperatively as a team member.
Verbal communication to provide basic program information and explain CYP processes.
One (1) year of experience working with children or youth in a child and youth setting.
Education

Provide a copy of high school diploma, GED, or college transcripts when applying.
Additional Information

Candidates must undergo background checks for child care positions, including fingerprint checks, Tier 1 child-care check, state criminal history repository check, installation records check, and other security checks as required by DoD instructions. Final background-check results, disqualifiers and probationary period requirements are governed by DoDI 1402.05. Participation in direct deposit is required within the first 30 days.
