
Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer

Role Overview
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is a cornerstone technical role responsible for designing, validating, and optimizing complex hard‑goods products. This engineer must be equally strong in mechanisms and structural design, with deep experience in 3D CAD, simulation, and design for manufacturing. You will lead engineering execution from concept through production, collaborating closely with product, sourcing, and leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Lead mechanical design for new hard‑goods products, mechanisms, and assemblies
Develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed drawings using Autodesk, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, or equivalent
Perform structural and mechanical simulations (FEA, motion studies, load analysis)
Drive DFM and DFA with suppliers and manufacturing partners
Lead prototyping, testing, and iterative refinement
Own engineering documentation, tolerances, and revision control
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams & suppliers to meet performance, cost, and manufacturability targets
Maintain engineering documentation, revision control, and BOM accuracy
Support project timelines and deliverables across multiple concurrent programs
Mentor junior engineers and support technical decision‑making
Qualifications
5+ years mechanical engineering experience in consumer products, outdoor gear, or related industries
Expert‑level proficiency in at least one major 3D CAD platform with a strong preference for Autodesk & Fusion 360.
Strong background in mechanisms, linkages, and mechanical systems
Strong structural engineering fundamentals (FEA, materials, load paths)
Experience designing for injection molding, machining, stamping, and assembly
Hands‑on prototyping and testing experience
Excellent communication and cross‑functional collaboration skills
Location & Work Format
This role will be based at our headquarters in Grand Rapids, MI. The expectation is to be onsite in our design studio for a minimum of 3 days per week. Remote focus work for enhancing personal productivity can be leveraged 1‑2 days per week where appropriate. Experienced candidates can be provided with up to 6 months of remote work before transitioning to Grand Rapids to allow for an earlier start date.
