Overview
Boston University Transportation Services offers a range of mobility options to the university community, including a private shuttle system, MBTA pass services, and active transportation amenities. Within this portfolio, the BU Cycle Kitchen (BUCK) encourages bicycling as an alternative to driving. The Bicycle Program Assistant Manager is a teaching position based in the BUCK, responsible for providing safe bicycling education and bicycle repair instruction, managing student staff, and promoting a culture of active transportation on campus.
Responsibilities
Bicycle maintenance & repair instruction (60%) – evaluate bicycles and scooters for safety issues, teach owners how to address those issues, and provide hands‑on mechanical instruction.
Safe biking education and encouragement (20%) – develop and deliver events, programs, and resources that promote bicycling, including classroom clinics, pop‑up events, and community rides.
Communication (10%) – promote events and programs through print, web, social‑media, and in‑person campaigns, requiring basic marketing, writing, and graphic design skills.
Operations (10%) – manage and train student staff, maintain inventory of helmets, lights, and spare parts, coordinate secure bike room access, register and remove abandoned bicycles, and assist with university bike facilities (parking, repair stations, pumps, lockers, etc.).
Required Skills
Enthusiasm for bicycling as a means of transport.
1–3 years of related experience (bike mechanic, educator, event organizer, etc.).
Proficiency in bicycle repair – professional mechanic experience preferred but not required.
Instructional experience – ability to convey mechanical concepts and tool handling to individuals with little or no mechanical background.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including print and web media.
Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $47,000 – $53,000 annually, based on experience, qualifications, and the scope of the role.
