
Behavioral Health Licensed Practical Nurse

Overview
Behavioral Health Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – position open exclusively to current Alabama Dept. of Corrections (AL DOC) incumbent employees. Full Time and Part Time positions may be available! This role in Elmore, AL at the Alabama Department of Corrections – Staton offers a unique opportunity to provide healthcare to a diverse, complex patient population in a correctional environment.
Responsibilities
As an LPN, you will play a critical role in delivering quality healthcare and protecting patient rights, dignity, and health. Key duties include:
Performing patient assessments and interviewing patients about current health problems and medication history
Taking vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, and weight
Providing wound care, including cleaning and bandaging injured areas
Administering medication, including injections and monitoring reaction to meds
Maintaining medical records, including entering information into the electronic health record system (TechCare)
Observing patient health and mental health status
Providing emergency first aid
Providing patient education and discharge or release planning
Qualifications
Education / Licenses / Certifications / Requirements:
Graduate from a Licensed Practical Nursing program
High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
Actively state‑certified as a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse
Obtain BLS CPR Certification (AHA preferred)
Ability to interact effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds, including those with mental health or substance abuse issues
Maintain confidentiality of all proprietary and/or confidential information; adhere to a Code of Conduct and comply with all facility correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements
Pass the facility’s criminal background check and drug screening
Physical Capabilities:
Ability to stand for long periods, lift and move patients (up to 50 pounds), bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks like CPR while maintaining good balance and endurance throughout a shift.
