Position Summary
The Science Learning Center (SLC) is seeking a student tutor to support peers enrolled in the Introduction to Physics PHY 101 foundations of physics course. This role focuses on helping students develop a foundational understanding of physical principles and apply those concepts through guided problem‑solving, conceptual explanation, and peer‑supported learning.

Schedule Requirements

Availability between 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

10–20 hours per week

Combination of daytime and at least one evening shift preferred

Opportunities for both in‑person and online tutoring

What You’ll Do

Create a welcoming and encouraging space for students to thrive academically.

Break down complex topics using clear, engaging teaching methods.

Collaborate with faculty and team members to continuously improve the learning experience.

Offer constructive feedback to help students overcome challenges and build confidence.

Provide one‑on‑one and small group tutoring in Introduction to Physics.

Assist students in understanding:

Basic kinematics and motion

Forces and Newton’s laws

Energy, work, and power

Momentum and basic mechanics concepts

Guide students through problem‑solving and quantitative reasoning.

Help students connect mathematical relationships to physical concepts.

Encourage active learning through questioning, explanation, and guided practice.

Facilitate tutoring sessions both

in person

and via

Zoom or similar platforms .

Use technology tools (screen sharing, digital whiteboards, etc.) to support learning.

Maintain accurate documentation of tutoring sessions as required.

Contribute to a supportive, welcoming learning environment.

What We’re Looking For

Enthusiasm for chemistry-related courses with a strong understanding of the material.

Great communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to explain concepts clearly and make learning approachable.

Organized and reliable, with strong time management abilities.

Previous tutoring experience is a plus, but not required.

Commitment to creating a positive learning atmosphere.

Preferred Qualifications

Faculty recommendation or referral letter.

Completion of additional physics coursework.

Comfort using technology for learning support (e.g., Zoom, digital whiteboards).
