
Physical Therapy Aide (DOH/NMBHI #13015)

Overview
The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute provides care to New Mexicans across six divisions, including inpatient psychiatric care, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient services, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long‑term care.
As the largest behavioral health complex in the state, inpatient/residential care is provided to over 250 patients every day, along with 400 outpatient clients a month. The institute employs over 600 staff to deliver high‑quality treatment.
Compensation
$16.50 – $24.75 hourly ($34,320 – $51,480 annually). Pay Band C2.
Responsibilities
Under the clinical direction of a physical therapist or physical therapy assistant, the physical therapy aide performs support activities for patients, clients, and residents.
Assists patients with exercises or functional activities.
Organizes, maintains, and disinfects therapy equipment after treatment.
Prepares treatment areas and sets up therapy equipment.
Transports patients to and from the therapy clinic.
Completes insurance forms and other paperwork.
Performs clerical tasks such as scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, and monitoring inventory levels.
Qualifications
Ideal candidate characteristics:
Experience working in skilled or long‑term care facilities.
Experience working on multidisciplinary teams.
Experience with CMS and Joint Commission surveys.
Ability to prioritize tasks and identify needs independently and in coordination with the therapy team.
Minimum Qualification
High school diploma or equivalent.
Employment Requirements
Valid driver’s license.
Defensive driving certificate.
Background check: successful completion of a post‑offer criminal records background check is required.
Drug and alcohol testing required as per federal and state law.
HIPAA training completion.
Additional Information
This position is designated as safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre‑employment random testing, nationwide criminal background checks, and may be conditioned upon the results.
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
