Overview

Assistant Project Manager, Construction Utilities Projects
The Assistant Project Manager supports the successful delivery of construction projects by coordinating daily activities, maintaining project documentation, and ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards. This role works closely with the Project Manager and cross-functional teams to monitor project progress, manage changes, and facilitate effective communication among contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and stakeholders. It offers hands-on exposure to high-voltage utility work, including transmission, substation, and grid modernization projects, in a stable, long-term program environment.

Responsibilities
Communicate proactively with contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and stakeholders to ensure smooth day-to-day project operations.

Monitor project progress against schedules and milestones, identify potential risks or delays, and propose practical solutions to keep the project on track.

Maintain accurate and organized project documentation, including reports, meeting minutes, correspondence, and compliance records.

Ensure adherence to safety regulations, quality standards, and internal company policies throughout all phases of the project.

Assist in managing change orders by tracking scope changes, coordinating approvals, and updating project documentation accordingly.

Support cost control and financial tracking activities, including monitoring budgets, expenses, and forecasted costs.

Participate in site inspections to observe construction activities, verify work in place, and report on progress and issues.

Provide regular updates on construction activities to the Project Manager and other stakeholders, highlighting progress, risks, and required actions.

Support the Project Manager in project closeout activities, including final inspections, punch list coordination, and completion of all closeout documentation.

Collaborate with project management, engineering, and field teams to coordinate RFIs, change orders, and other project coordination needs.

Contribute to continuous improvement of project management processes by sharing lessons learned and recommending enhancements.

Essential Skills
Degree in Construction Management or related field, and/or a minimum of 1+ years of experience in construction project management, assistant project management, project engineering, or a similar role.

Experience in construction projects in residential, commercial, or industrial environments.

Strong knowledge of construction processes and construction management principles.

Practical experience with project management and project coordination in a construction setting.

Ability to support and understand RFIs, change orders, estimation, and project engineering activities.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey information to contractors, stakeholders, and internal teams.

Demonstrated leadership capabilities in coordinating tasks and supporting project teams.

Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues, evaluate options, and recommend effective solutions.

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience supporting utility construction projects such as transmission, substations, or grid modernization initiatives.

Exposure to high-voltage transmission, substations, protection and control, civil and foundation work, or energized utility work.

Familiarity with cost control practices, financial tracking, and project estimation in construction projects.

Interest in growing into project management, leadership, or specialized technical roles within the utility and power industry.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain comprehensive and accurate project records.

Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with project managers, assistant project managers, project coordinators, and engineering teams.

Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based, working from a Fort Wayne, IN office in a professional project management setting. The role follows a Monday–Friday schedule, averaging 40 hours per week. While most work occurs in the office, the Assistant Project Manager can expect occasional site visits a few times per month to observe construction activities and participate in inspections. The work environment is highly collaborative, involving regular interaction with project managers, assistant project managers, project coordinators, engineers, and field personnel. The organization offers a stable, long-term workload focused on transmission, substation, and grid modernization programs, providing exposure to critical utility infrastructure projects that improve grid reliability and support communities.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Wayne, IN.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
