What To Expect
The Process Operator, Wood River Refinery will work independently and with other personnel to operate equipment and processes in the refinery, which produces transportation fuels, petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt, petroleum coke, and other products. Some of the processes involve hazardous and volatile materials under high temperature and pressure. Typical working conditions include: outside weather and elements, blowing air, heat, noise, vibration and occasionally working from heights and confined spaces. Operators must follow safe work practices including wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In addition, Operators perform various duties required to keep their assigned processing unit/area operating safely and at specified production/run rates. The position requires the successful completion of an online assessment. The assessment must be completed within 7 days of the application date or prior to the job posting expiration date (May 3, 2026), whichever is earlier.
What You'll Do
Demonstrate awareness and commitment to safety
Maintain equipment and operations
Take samples/readings of various process streams
Operate unit consoles
Monitor and observe assigned area for abnormal conditions and emergency situations
Make necessary changes to ensure product is manufactured on specification
Turn valves
Take gauge and instrument readings
Enter and retrieve computer data as well as data analysis
Lubricate and perform minor maintenance of equipment
Work with outside contractors and agencies
Participate in safety reviews
Initiate work orders and permitting for work related to the assigned unit
Complete lock out/tag out process for maintenance work
Maintain proper and safe process operations of the operating equipment
Respond to safety and environmental incidents, should they occur, in a safe and efficient manner
Participate in annual training refreshers
Uphold company values, understand and implement all relevant company policies and procedures to ensure all work meets the required standard
Serve on the basic fire crew – must be able to wear full firefighting bunker gear and perform strenuous firefighting activities in extremes of heat and cold weather
What You’ll Bring – Required
Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
18 years of age or older
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Valid driver’s license
Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
Willing and able to perform and comply with the following, with or without reasonable accommodation:
Climb up to 250 feet in height
Lift up to 50 pounds
Work at least a 12‑hour rotating shift, which includes some weekends and holidays
Read technical procedures and materials in English
Work overtime
Assume on‑call responsibilities
Work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos
Work near large, hot, high‑speed machines
Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and at high temperatures
Work outside in harsh weather conditions
Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (e.g., steel‑toe shoes, fall protection, hearing protection, eye protection)
Maintain facial hair free or clean‑shaven to allow respirator seal
Able to evacuate in a safe and timely manner in the event of an emergency
Able to read at a level to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, permits, instruction manuals
Learn computer software associated with process operations
Perform firefighting duties
What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred
Associate’s degree or higher in Process Technology
1 or more years of work experience in manufacturing, oil & gas, heavy industrial, public safety, or military
The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. The refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization, and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low‑sulfur; heavy, high‑sulfur; and high‑acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
Compensation
The starting hourly pay rate for this position is $33.84 per hour, with an anticipated increase up to $44.25 per hour upon completion of training and up to $47.36 per hour after one year. Pay is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Relocation assistance is not available for this position. The anticipated start date for this position is August 2026.
