What To Expect
The Process Operator, Billings Refinery, works independently and with other personnel to maintain and operate equipment and processes in the refinery. Some processes involve hazardous and volatile materials under high temperature and pressure. Typical working conditions include outside weather, blowing air, heat, noise, vibration, and occasionally working from heights and confined spaces. Operators must follow safe work practices including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and perform various duties required to keep their assigned processing unit or area operating safely and at specified production/run rates.
What You'll Do
Demonstrate awareness and commitment to safety
Maintain equipment and operations
Take samples/readings of various process streams
Operate unit consoles
Monitor and observe assigned area for abnormal conditions and emergency situations
Work with outside contractors and agencies
Participate in safety reviews
Follow safety processes and procedures
Initiate work orders and permit work related to the assigned unit
Maintain proper and safe process operations of the operating equipment
Serve on the emergency response fire brigade, rescue team, and/or first responder team
Complete assigned training
Participate in training refreshers
Uphold company values, understand and implement all relevant company policies and procedures to ensure all work meets the required standards
What You’ll Bring – Required
Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
18 years of age or older
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
Work a rotating shift schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays
Work overtime
Read technical procedures and materials in English
Learn computer software associated with process operations
Work in enclosed spaces such as tanks and silos
Work near large, hot, high-speed machines
Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
Wear fire retardant clothing and PPE, including protective toe footwear, ear and eye protection, head protection, hand protection, and fall protection
Maintain facial hygiene to allow a respirator/face mask to seal properly (e.g., free of facial hair and/or clean-shaven)
Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat
Climb up to 250 feet in height
Lift up to 50 pounds
Perform firefighting duties
Work outside in harsh weather conditions
Successfully complete an online assessment within 7 days of application or prior to job posting expiration (May 7, 2026), whichever is earlier.
What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred
Associate’s degree or higher in Process Technology
At least one year of direct work experience in manufacturing, heavy industry (including oil & gas), public safety, and/or military
Compensation
The hourly rate during the initial training period on an 8‑hour day schedule is $42.03/hour and moves to $41.07/hour on the 12‑hour rotating shift schedule with built‑in overtime. Employees may advance within the Operator pay progression based on the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The outside controlman classification rate is $50.26 per hour.
