Senior Accountant – Construction Industry
North of Atlanta, GA
Position Summary
The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in overseeing the financial operations of a construction business. This position is responsible for project-based accounting, job cost tracking, general ledger management, financial reporting, and cash flow analysis.
The ideal candidate brings strong construction accounting experience, a deep understanding of debits and credits, and hands-on expertise with Sage Intacct. This role partners closely with operations, project management, and leadership to ensure accurate financial data, support forecasting, and analyze budget-to-actual performance across multiple construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
Construction & Project-Based Accounting (Required)
- Manage job cost accounting for multiple construction projects
- Track and analyze project costs, labor, materials, WIP, and gross margins
- Ensure accurate allocation of costs to jobs and cost codes
- Partner with project managers to provide financial insights and cost control analysis
- Monitor WIP schedules and support percentage-of-completion accounting
General Ledger & Month-End Close
- Maintain and reconcile the general ledger
- Prepare and post journal entries with strong attention to debits and credits
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and research discrepancies
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare accurate monthly financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow)
- Analyze actual results against budget and forecast
- Identify trends, variances, risks, and opportunities for improvement
- Assist with forecasting, financial modeling, and performance analysis
Cash Flow & Treasury Management
- Monitor daily and long-term cash flow needs
- Prepare and maintain rolling cash flow projections
- Support accounts receivable, accounts payable, and collections processes
- Ensure accurate recording of cash transactions across all projects
Inventory & Materials Accounting
- Oversee inventory accounting related to construction materials and supplies
- Ensure accurate inventory valuation, reconciliation, and adjustments
- Monitor usage, obsolescence, and material variances
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Assist in the annual budgeting and reforecasting processes
- Compare budgeted results to actual performance
- Provide variance explanations and recommendations to leadership
Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
- Utilize Sage Intacct to manage and streamline accounting operations
- Maintain strong internal controls and accounting procedures
- Support audits and external financial reviews
- Identify opportunities for process improvements within accounting and reporting
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with construction industry experience required
- Proven expertise in project-based accounting and job costing preferred
- Hands-on experience with Sage Intacct preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and debits and credits
- Experience preparing financial statements, forecasts, and cash flow analysis
- Background in inventory accounting and cost allocations
