Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Administrator / Nurse Manager, observe, assess, plan, intervenes, evaluates outcomes, documents all aspects of patient care, coordinates scheduling, provides primary proactive management for the service area, supervises, counsels, and evaluates other nursing staff, collaborates with Nurse Coordinator and MH Specialist for 24‑hour continuity of care, assumes duties of the Nurse Coordinator in their absence, and provides direct nursing care as needed. The role includes exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials and participation in disaster response or COOP activation when required.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
Attend work regularly and work on assigned or rotating shift schedules, including extended shift and overtime as required.
Assess the health/mental status of patients at admission, transfer, and ongoing, documenting assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
Perform CPR/Heimlich techniques according to American Heart Association standards.
Coordinate staffing and patient care activities with nurse administrators and staff nurses, addressing performance problems promptly and maintaining accurate documentation.
Facilitate smooth admission and transfer processes, communicate with admissions staff, review documentation for appropriate status, and triage patients as needed.
Carry out medical staff orders, implement nursing interventions per nursing standards and hospital policies, and inform unit nursing staff of relevant information.
Provide and document individual/group teaching on medications, illness, special treatment, and other patient education.
Implement special precautions, document rights restrictions, apply restraint/seclusion procedures per policy, and maintain patient safety, protecting patients from self‑harm or harm to others while upholding patient rights.
Participate in the client abuse and neglect process, ensuring patient safety and implementing Treatment Intervention Protection Strategies (TIPS). Participate in performance‑improvement teams and coordinate nursing service personnel utilization.
Attend mandatory trainings and ongoing in‑service education appropriate to the patient population.
Perform other duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response, recovery, or COOP activation with possible alternate shift or location.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of recognized American Nurses Association Nursing Standards.
Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act.
Skills in supervisory and management techniques.
Skill in performing CPR, agency‑approved aggression management and restraint techniques, and emergency care in a medical or psychiatric emergency.
Skill in positive interaction with patients, staff, families, and the public.
Ability to handle crisis situations calmly.
Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
Licensure Requirements
Licensed to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the State of Texas or state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
Initial Screening Criteria
Graduation from a nursing program accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
At least six (6) months of experience as a practicing registered nurse in a health agency, hospital, or healthcare facility.
At least six (6) months of experience as a practicing registered nurse in a health agency, hospital, or healthcare facility is preferred.
Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
