Job Summary
Victory Learning Center is seeking a Physical Education Teacher to work with students aged 5 to 21, primarily diagnosed on the Autism spectrum, with mental health and/or behavioral concerns, and developmental or intellectual disabilities. The Physical Education Teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students in a variety of educational settings. The person in this position is responsible for creating a supportive environment where students of all abilities can participate in physical activities, improve motor skills, and enhance physical fitness.
Responsibilities
Provides an educational climate that encompasses success, independence, a productive atmosphere, and provides students with encouragement, safety and stimulation.
Completes weekly lesson plans based on a developmentally appropriate curriculum which follows the New York State Educational Department Learning Standards.
Prepares lessons and other instructional materials to meet individual needs of the students.
Demonstrates adequate knowledge of subject matter—Physical Education, ability to think critically, and individualize instruction.
Promotes fitness, coordination, balance, strength, and social interaction through adaptive activities.
Implements Classroom Behavior Management Plan (Tier 1) and any student‑specific Tier 2 or Tier 3 interventions.
Acts as a team leader of classroom staff including assistants, therapists and social workers.
Communicates effectively with parents (through notebooks, phone calls, conferences, district meetings, communication app, etc.)
Completes quarterly progress reports on all students that are distributed to parents and the school districts.
Maintains student confidentiality within HIPAA/FERPA and agency guidelines.
Performs any other duties assigned by supervisor.
Skills
Ability to utilize computer systems and software necessary to perform position functions.
Effective oral/written communication and interpersonal skills for interactions with various individuals both internal and external to the program. Must be able to deal tactfully and effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
Ability to work well in a team environment.
Significant problem solving and diagnostic skills with the ability to quickly analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action.
Ability to handle stressful and sensitive situations in a professional manner.
Minimum Experience Required
1–2 years of experience is required. 1–2 years of working with individuals with Autism, Intellectual Disability and/or mental health involvement is preferred.
License / Registration / Certifications Required
Initial NYS Teaching Certification in Physical Education.
Training Requirements
Continuing education as per NYS Office of Professional guidelines.
SCIP‑R.
CPR.
Physical Requirements
The overall nature of the position is sedentary requiring little physical effort with occasional light physical exertion. There is little, if any, exposure to environmental conditions.
Constant physical demand: sitting.
Frequent physical demands: standing, walking, climbing, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and eye/hand/foot coordination.
Occasional physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling.
