The Indiana Veterans' Home is located in West Lafayette, Indiana. Originally created to care for veterans of the Civil War, the Indiana Veterans' Home welcomed its first resident in 1896. Located on 250+ acres in West Lafayette, IVH is a full-service care facility offering a complete array of services for residents. The mission of the Indiana Veterans' Home is to honor Indiana's veterans and their spouses by providing the highest level of care in a therapeutic home-like environment, enhancing health and yielding optimal quality of life. To do this and meet the unique needs of these heroes and their families, we deliver compassionate and comprehensive skilled care while integrating arts and cultural programming and preserving the rich history of the Home.
Salary: The salary for this position traditionally starts between $16.16 - $23.44 per hour, based on education and/or experience.
A Day in the Life:
Performs duties for the physical care of residents such as bathing, feeding, dressing, toileting, etc.
Trains and assists patients with daily living tasks
Helps patients dress, eat, bathe, brush teeth, and comb hair
Escorts patients to and from therapies, dining area, other areas of the hospital for treatment and tests, medical facilities outside the hospital and/or on field trips
Checks and records patients' vital signs
Supervises daily routine of patients
Assists in creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment by performing a variety of housekeeping duties such as cleaning equipment, changing bed linens, etc.
Sorts and tags institutional linens and personal linens
Establishes rapport with residents to aid in the treatment program and rehabilitation
Observes, records and reports the condition and behavior of patients
Participates in patient care plans involving care and treatment of the geriatric patient
Participates as a member of the health team observing resident behavior and participates in patient care plans
What You'll Need for Success:
Must be certified and maintain certification as a CNA
Must maintain first aid and CPR certification
Ability to understand and communicate with residents and understand and complete nursing forms
Ability to follow verbal instructions
Ability to provide basic nursing care practices
Ability to use medical equipment within the scope of certification
Ability to provide safe, efficient resident care, following all applicable state and Veterans' Administration rules, IVH policies and procedures, and all HIPAA rules
Must attend and complete all required in-service training
Ability to prioritize workload
Ability to be flexible
Ability to recognize basic changes in a resident's condition and report to the nurse
Ability to administer medications and treatments in a safe, efficient manner, recognizing medication side effects and reporting the same
