Job Description
Position Overview
The Shop Foreman oversees mechanic services, focusing on identifying and addressing repair or replacement needs and performing preventive maintenance. This role ensures all repairs meet industry standards, assists other mechanics as needed, and ensures that tools and materials are readily available at the job site for efficient work completion.
Job Qualifications
Possess and maintain valid and appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or credential(s) as may be required by the position.
Georgia Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsement within 6 months of hire
Minimum two (2) years’ experience in repair of gasoline and diesel engines or equivalent knowledge/training.
Prior experience serving as a Lead Mechanic or comparable role preferred.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Essential Job Duties
Attend and actively participate in in-service trainings and safety meetings to remain current on regulations, procedures, and best practices; share critical information with staff to support safe and effective operations.
Communicate and collaborate with district administrators, transportation staff, vendors, and regulatory agencies to coordinate services, resolve operational issues, and ensure continuity of transportation services.
Diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions in school buses and related equipment; determine appropriate repair or replacement actions to maintain safety and reliability.
Supervise, assign, and evaluate the daily work of shop personnel to ensure maintenance and repair tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and within established timelines.
Develop, implement, and monitor preventive maintenance programs, inspection schedules, and repair protocols in accordance with federal, state, and district guidelines.
Provide clear direction to staff regarding procedures, safety standards, and work order status to promote accountability, informed decision-making, and regulatory compliance.
Inspect and approve completed repairs and maintenance work to ensure quality standards are met and identify potential future maintenance needs.
Maintain accurate records of repairs, labor, parts inventory, warranties, costs, and compliance documentation to support reporting requirements and budget management.
Perform skilled repairs and maintenance on school buses, district vehicles, and shop equipment to ensure safe, dependable operation.
Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state transportation laws, safety regulations, and School Board policies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and stand for extended periods of time. The employee is also required to talk, hear, and sit. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, and/or reach. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
