Pathway Talent Partners is partnering with a well-established, growing commercial construction organization to identify a Controller who will provide hands‑on financial leadership and strong accounting oversight for a core regional business unit. Role Summary
The Controller will serve as the senior accounting and finance leader for the region, with responsibility for financial reporting, project accounting, and operational financial performance. This role partners closely with operations and project leadership to ensure accurate job costing, forecasting, and margin management across a diverse portfolio of construction projects.
The ideal candidate blends deep construction accounting expertise with a practical, business‑minded approach and a collaborative leadership style.
Key Responsibilities
Lead regional accounting operations including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and job costing
Ensure timely and accurate monthly close, financial statements, and management reporting
Oversee WIP schedules and revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606
Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and internal policies
Project & Operational Finance
Partner closely with Project Managers and Operations leadership to:
Monitor project budgets, costs, and margin performance
Review and validate subcontractor and vendor billings
Analyze job cost variances and recommend corrective actions
Support preconstruction and bidding activities with financial insight and risk assessment
Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital needs
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
Lead annual budgeting and rolling forecast processes for the region
Provide actionable financial analysis to support strategic and operational decisions
Track KPIs and project‑level profitability to drive performance improvements
Ensure compliance with tax, regulatory, and bonding requirements
Serve as a key contact for external auditors, lenders, and insurance partners
Oversee lien management, contract compliance, and financial risk mitigation efforts
Team Leadership & Process Improvement
Lead, mentor, and develop a regional accounting team
Drive consistency, efficiency, and continuous improvement in financial processes
Support ERP optimization and reporting enhancements; experience with modern construction ERPs strongly preferred
Candidate Profile
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
Experience
7–10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including significant time in the construction industry
Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring accounting teams
Strong background in job costing, WIP reporting, and construction revenue recognition
Technical Skills
Experience with construction accounting systems (e.g., Acumatica, Sage/Timberline, Viewpoint, Procore, or similar)
Advanced Excel skills and comfort with financial analysis and reporting
Solid understanding of GAAP and construction‑specific accounting practices
Core Competencies
Hands‑on, detail‑oriented leader with a practical business mindset
Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities
Effective communicator able to partner across operations and executive leadership
