The New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute provides care to New Mexicans across six divisions, including hospital level inpatient psychiatric care, residential treatment for adolescents, outpatient care, detox and residential substance use treatment, and skilled/long‑term care. The largest behavioral health complex in the state, it delivers inpatient and residential care to over 250 New Mexicans daily and serves about 400 outpatient clients a month. The institute employs more than 600 staff members across all divisions to ensure high‑quality treatment and care.

Salary
$35.37 – $53.05 hourly ($73,568 – $110,352 annually). Pay band: C10.

Job Purpose
The incumbent will provide nursing care and leadership for the Adult Psychiatric Division/CARE, guiding direct‑care staff and overseeing all nursing activities to support hospital goals.

Responsibilities

Administer all types of medications, including oral and injectable, to relieve anxiety, control behavior, and address physical health issues.

Perform treatments ordered by physicians to support patients’ optimal physical and mental wellbeing.

Direct and supervise nursing staff, ensuring high standards of patient care.

Coordinate with multidisciplinary team members to develop and implement individualized care plans.

Customers
Patients, residents, and clients.

Ideal Candidate

Experience caring for the mentally ill.

Experience in comprehensive nursing care.

Experience administering all types of medications.

Licensed in accordance with the Nursing Practice Act Section 61-3-2 through 61-3-31 NMSA 1978 and 16.12.1 through 16.12.20 NMAC, as applicable.

Minimum Qualification
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico or eligibility for such licensure, or eligibility for a temporary license. Three (3) years of experience in related duties.

Employment Requirements

Valid driver’s license.

Defensive driving certificate.

Safety‑sensitive position: subject to pre‑employment, random, and nationwide criminal background checks.

Drug and alcohol testing as required by federal and state law.

Completion of HIPAA training.

Working Conditions
Work in a hospital and office setting with extensive computer and phone use. Exposure to mentally and behaviorally challenged residents who may exhibit unpredictable or violent behaviors. The institute is a 100% tobacco‑free campus; no tobacco or e‑cigarette products are permitted on site.
